187556 2003-10-29 07:35:00 About six weeks ago I signed up to msn hotmail so I could get a cnet passport to sign up to msn messenger.
I have not given my hotmail address to anyone or entered it on any websites
You could imagine my surprise when i first logged into messenger last night(is a long story as to why I havent used it till now) and it told me I had 324 emails in my hotmail inbox

324!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and no-one other than myself and microsoft know my address.
Can someone explain how this has happened. Does hotmail sell or pass on hotmail addresses?
This seems to me to suck a huge amount of arse.

187557 2003-10-29 07:43:00 Reason Number one why not to use hotmail. My guess is that your email address was randomly guessed using a wordlist. Then once it was discovered to be a real account passed on to others. Other than that most hotmail accounts get spammed to death just about from the instant they are created.
Try orcon instead if you want a free email account. They use to offer them with their free webhosting option.

did you subscribe to all the offers. My guess is that you did, but may not of realised at the time
If you only needed a hotmail account to get a passport, than just ignore hotmail. You don't need to use it

187560 2003-10-29 08:29:00 All my mail goes to junk mail, from there I select what comes into my inbox, then delete all the junk periodically.I hope that is clear as it works quite well. Thomas (1820)
187561 2003-10-29 08:46:00 Proberly a bit late now but, if you go to Options | Personal Profile and un-tick: "Share my e-mail address" and "Share my other information". But

I would say half the internet has your email now.
