187205 2003-10-28 05:55:00 hello,
do dvd players in NZ play both PAL & NTSC formats. computers do just fine but I'm refering to "actual" dvd players.

which format are most NZ dvds? (not in nz right now so i can't check it out)

187206 2003-10-28 06:06:00 Those stand-alone DVD players I have had anything to do with have been dual format NTSC/PAL

Looking at the DVDs here at the moment, all are PAL, either all zone or zone 4 but there will be a number of NTSC from zone 1 about.

187207 2003-10-28 06:42:00 most stand alone dvd players have a switch on the back with the options PAL, NTSC, or auto select, play back.

The real problem is whether your (old) tv will accept NTSC images.

187209 2003-10-28 08:16:00 thanks people,
i figured thats the way it was. here in japan their dvd players only play NTSC.

i have a further question. i have a toshiba dvd-rom in my pc. when playing NTSC dvds it is fine. when playing PAL dvds (The West Wing ordered from England), as the camera pans (moves left to right if i'm using the correct term) the resolution on screen is not as sharp.
ie. people are not as clear.

is this possibly due to PAL only having 25 frames per second versus NTSC's 30?

surely a human could not notice the difference?

powerDVD 5
toshiba SD-M1802 16x (running at UDMA-2 mode)
winXP sp1
p4 2.4GB
512MB DDR
GeForce4 MX440 64MB(AGP4x)

only software i run in background is zonealarm and norton antivirus

thanks

187210 2003-10-28 08:30:00 not likly. NTSC is actually poorer quality than PAL.

hard to say without seeing it but it could simply be the movie or mayby the dvd software.
