187944 2003-10-30 15:21:00 I've a had a few posts.
I've had several more which vanished into the ether never to be seen again.
Each of those took me some time to compose. They were things I either felt strongly about or I was diffident & was careful & slow in writing.
On each occasion, I was too demoralised or tired to start again from scratch.
Tonight - or this morning - it has just happened again. This time I'm fed up enough to ask if this is normal (like you have to write fast - or there is a rec ipe ) or is there something wrong at my end?
Admittedly, this whole page has mushy numbers on my machine.
But now I have to send this fast or it will vanish like the last one...

187945 2003-10-30 17:59:00 I have this happen to me sometimes on some forums I belong to.
I now compose my message in notepad, then copy & paste, this also helps if I get kicked offline.

187946 2003-10-30 18:21:00 i copy the text i've written before i submit it - u don't have to paste it anywhere, and then if it stuffs up - just go back and paste it in fergie (424)
187947 2003-10-30 19:20:00 Yes I sometimes use notepad as well because it doesn't always post the message if you use the back button on your browser.

If you are copying in from notepad, make sure wordwrap is off, so it doesn't mess up the formatting when you copy it back in. :)

Speed (in the sense of how quick you type your post) is not an issue. Your writing doesn't actually go to the server until you hit Post Message anyhow and the form with your tetx in should refresh and loose the text unles you force it too. If it gets lost it implies a connection problem that stopped the message being written as a post into the database.

Does it take a long time to submit - i.e. when you hit Post Message does the page take ages to refresh? When you have posted it what happens next? i.e. do you get taken back to the thread but can't see your message there?

Have you tried chnaging how you view threads? I also view in Flat mode, not threaded - much easier to see eveythign sequentially that way I find.

And what exactly do you mean by "mushy numbers"? Is the dsiply of the page messed up?

187949 2003-10-31 02:41:00 I get this sort of thing from time to time ... but usually it's not "total loss". It's just that I get a (locally generated) "server not found" page when I hit Post. I usually persist, perhaps trying Preview, or even Spell Check. A few attempts usually gets it done. Except when the IDG server is down. :D Sometimes I get double or treble postings, when it has gone through despite the "not found" response.

I sometimes wonder whether it might be due to short timeouts for IP cacheing or cookie lifetimes --- I post from Public Library computyers and I'm behind a couple of proxies and all sorts of "protection". :D

I had to give up on Sunday ... Post just got me back into the Reply generation page. After a bit of frustration I decided that the world could wait a couple of days to gain the benefit of my wisdom. ;-)
