187851 2003-10-30 06:55:00 I have Outlook Express 6 and on some occasions have no luck with attempting to open attachments with the following error box message appearing:
This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in My Computer by clicking View and then clicking Folder Options.
I honestly have no idea how or where to go to from here. Maybe some settings need to be changed as I have, after three years use of outlook express, only in the past few months started to have this problem - if it is at all a problem.

187852 2003-10-30 07:21:00 What are the extensions for the attachments? You will get this message if the attachment requires a certain program to open it and you don't have it installed or configured to open that extension with.

Also, be careful with opening unknown extensions received in emails.

187853 2003-10-30 14:55:00 Hi Jen C
How do I identify an extension ?
They are generally a doc attachment and in an example its a 1.84mb doc and from a safe location.
I can always FWD these email messages with the worrying attachments on to another PC and they don't seem to have a problem opening them but we don't know what programs they have that elliminates my problem other than they have microsoft WORD installed whereas I only have WORKS.

187854 2003-10-30 15:59:00 If they are .doc attachments you will probably need MS Word installed on your comp. JJJJJ (528)

187856 2003-10-30 18:39:00 Hi Thomas,
I have a list that I have set up in Excel that I need to send to people.
When I need to send it I just click on 'Send this sheet' & it is able to be read by the ones that do not have Excel.
Is that the difference as I have not sent it as an attachment?
Pauline.

187858 2003-10-30 21:12:00 Hi galeforce

>they have microsoft WORD installed whereas I only have WORKS.

You can open up Microsoft Words documents (.doc) with Works as this includes a modified version of MS Word. This file association should be happening automatically, but you can set it up yourself again. Save the MS document somewhere handy on your hard drive (eg. under "My Documents"). Then go and find that saved document. Right click on it and select "Open". You will get a message about "Windows cannot open this file". Just click beside "Select the program from a list" and then OK. Have a look through your list for Works Word (or similar name). Select that program and also put a tick in the box where it says "Always use the selected program to open this type of file". Click OK and exit out.

Now try to open that file normally and it should be OK.

For further references with this sort of problem, there is a excellent PressF1 FAQ on how to change file associations which you can find by clicking on the FAQ button up on the top right of the page.

Cheers
Jen :)

187859 2003-10-30 21:56:00 If you just want to look, and not add/modify MS office files, MS does provide FREE (don't faint now) viewers here (www.microsoft.com) Pheonix (280)
