| 187836 | 2003-10-30 06:02:00 | I downloaded this game called Halloween (www.linuxgames.com) for Linux to try it out, but when I try to run the executable, my screen goes black for a second and then returns to normal without the game opening up. In the readme file, it mentions some required libraries (SDL v1.2 and OGG/VORBIS) which I have gone and installed. My video card is a GeForce 2 MX400 and I have official nvidia drivers installed (can play Tuxracer 3D with no problems). I have tried running the program with my screen resolution set at 800 x 600 which made no difference. I know logs are wonderful things, and undoubtly somewhere on the system is a record of what is happening - but I can't find any mention of errors or I am simply looking in the wrong logs (tried System logs and /var/log/XFree86.0 and XFree86.1) :D So any suggestions where else to look for the error messages? I noticed on the website in the above link that someone made a comment about needing a glibc 2.2 binary to play the game, so if you think this would result in what I am getting, then I am not going to bother with the game. I downloaded glibc-2.3.2-11.9.i386.rpm and running a --test switch shows I am going to have some fun tracking down dependencies. Thanks in advance Jen :) |

| 187838 | 2003-10-30 07:59:00 | Thanks rsnic :D The terminal window didn't work, got a bad command comment. But, it did get me looking more closely at things and ..... I have it working! The games readme had this to say : "... then execute ./Hallo999 binary to launch the game." This is what I was doing literally - I cheated and copied the command from the file and pasted it into the terminal window. However, I have just noticed that their command has a w missing from the file name. It is actually named Hallow999. Sooo .... adding a w makes a huge difference :D, and now it opens! Thanks Jen |
