187790 2003-10-30 02:09:00 Winzip is not actually free, it is shareware (try before you buy) so if you are not going to use it then you may as well uninstall it. If you keep and use it then it costs $US29. Susan B (19)
187791 2003-10-30 02:19:00 Hi Susan B,
You are correct Winzip is shareware- but appears to work indefinitely - no doubt without some of it's co-programs-
I have only had to use a zip once- and then I was told I had to download before opening it - where as now I wonder whether I jumped the gun- meaning XP would have opened it anyway

187792 2003-10-30 02:48:00 If you want to know how to use the Windows built in compression then see this PC World article here (pcworld.co.nz) and scroll down until you see "Compress in a jiffy" and "Decompress in a flash". parry (27)
187793 2003-10-30 02:51:00 Damn, wrong link. Try this (pcworld.co.nz) parry (27)
187794 2003-10-30 02:54:00 effie: what was meant by that "download before opening" probably was caused by one of those "what do I do" windows which lets you choose between "save as a file" (download) or "open it where it is". If you told it to open it, that would not work ... the remote site would not allow a decompressed version to be made on their disk. :D Graham L (2)

Yes, that is true. It is a "conscience" thing really - you are supposed to pay for it if you like it and continue using it, but the majority of people probably don't.

Like Graham L said, when you come across .zip files that you want to use you have to download them to your computer first and then unzip them. You cannot unzip them before downloading them, unlike some .exe files that can be run prior to downloading (and you need to be VERY careful of those!).

Once you have downloaded the .zip file you just need to scan it with your anti-virus then right-click on it and choose "Extract All" and follow the Wizard to unzip it. Easy. :-)

Note: that is for on Win XP - you will need Winzip for Win 98, etc.

187796 2003-10-30 05:38:00 winzip (been a while since i used it) and winrar are both shareware and you can continue to use them minuis a few functions which only work if you pay for it (and the nag screen of course). however i've never needed the xtra functions so why bother paying for it. tweak'e (174)
