| 187781 | 2003-10-30 01:25:00 | Hi, After watching Fairgo last night - I considered the implications with we amateures! When friend asked about it I decided to get it in writing, from F1. First the lady involved was well ripped off in the initial purchase, even including H P fees. This shows a remarkable naivete. Second the end result warned all of us to watch where we surfed, and downloaded. My suggestion is a fire wall - ie Zonealarms, as I have in my W 98 SE harddrive,--should ask permission first, and,if this happened - surely- I must be secure. -then in W XP I have been told, has it's own firewall, and as I use that in my other h/d, have not installed a separate firewall Am I being foolish? effie c |

At a quick glance you read that by Pressing the NO button you are simply ignoring the message when in actual fact you have just said OK do it. In other words they have switched the yes no around which catches many people out. I think telecom and telstra should (if they haven't already) setup a Toll bar for phones but one that you can Bypass if you key in a 5 number code in other words to call Aussie you dial 0061 (passcode) then the aussie number you want to call. sure it means more numbers but it would stop all phone hijackings immediately. Just a thought |

Basically the Win XP firewall will prevent intruders into your computer from the internet but will not stop traffic going out . So if you are unluckly enough to contract a trojan that is not picked up by your anti-virus you will not know about any unauthorised activity or traffic (and information) going out of your computer to someone else . A third-party firewall alerts you to all unauthorised traffic coming in as well as going out and thus lets you retain control of your computer . I consider a third-party firewall to be highly desirable for the above reason . To answer your question "am I being foolish": no, not necessarily, but it would be a good idea to install a third party firewall . Regarding closing pop-up windows, I prefer to use Alt+F4 to get rid of them rather than click on any so-called "Close" buttons . |

| 187784 | 2003-10-30 02:14:00 | Hi Susan B, So you suggest I install Zoenealarm as I have in my other h/d- or is there a "third" party available that I need? effie c |

| 187785 | 2003-10-30 02:52:00 | Zone Alarm is definatly one of the best free firewall programs to use, it also has a pop up block feature that should stop the pop ups from appearing (that may only be the pro version though, not sure) Another way to stop the popups would be to use the Google bar Version 2 as it also has a pretty gfoot pop up blocker. | Odin (227) | ||

Yes, if you are familiar with and are happy with ZoneAlarm I would suggest you use that . ZoneAlarm is a third party program since it does not come with Windows . |

| 187787 | 2003-10-30 05:34:00 | the thing that bugged me was the techs advise was a little short of the mark. if you install a firewall, run an update antivirus and keep your windows updates upto date then you can advoid most of these dailers. add to it a bit of comman sence and you will very rarely get infected with dailers and often you will spot them when they do install. actually one that i cleaned out of a pc today looks to have used a java exploit. the antivirus picked it up (after it was updated). |
