187734 2003-10-29 22:03:00 Hi, help please if you can. I have just replaced a dud hard drive and installed Win XP on the new one. I also installed patches, Office, Nortons, Zone Alarm, etc, etc, about 40 programs, in one afternoon. Somewhere along the way the PC stopped being able to reboot from Windows. It will 'Turn Off' from Windows but not 'Restart'. It goes into its routine until the screen is blank, then nothing happens. The only way out is to push the PC's power button in for 5 seconds to turn the whole lot off. Any ideas? Andrew57 (2365)
187735 2003-10-30 02:37:00 Hmm, it is not a good idea to install too many programs and patches at once, as you have just found out. :-(

All I can suggest is try using Win XP's System Restore, if it is enabled, until the problem goes away. Hopefully doing that will soon reveal the culprit.

187736 2003-10-30 05:10:00 Thanks. Unfortunately, although system restore was 'on' it said it was unable to restore to 'restore point'. I do not know why. Andrew57 (2365)
187737 2003-10-30 06:42:00 No one else has offered any possible solutions yet so I guess the next option I would try is uninstalling the programs that were last installed, one by one and seeing if that helps.

Failing that, if it is a big problem you may be looking at doing the whole job again - a bit more carefully next time.

187738 2003-10-30 09:08:00 just an idea maybe worth a try, Try a system repair using the install disk I cant remember the exact steps but im sure if you did a search on this forum someone will have covered it elsewhere or maybe someone has done a faq on this subject beama (111)
187739 2003-10-30 20:14:00 Thanks for your replies. 'Tis hard. Have tried repair tools provided and tried disabling progs, svcs etc through msconfig... lengthy process. No joy. I vaguely recall reading about identical problem and the solution was in changing a switch in the registry, but I wouldn't know where to start looking. Maybe also boot.ini is wrong. Any further ideas... especially about the Registry... anyone?? Andrew57 (2365)
187740 2003-10-30 23:41:00 Andrew57,

Have you had a look at the following articles to see if anything there helps in your case? WinXP Shutdown Problems (aumha.org) Also I assume you have WinXp SP1 and the WinXP_Rollup _1 (KB 826939) updates all done

Cheers, Babe.

187741 2003-10-30 23:59:00 Yes, thanks.... all patches loaded, all up to date, and the MS articles on troubleshooting XP reboots was one of the first things I did, printing out the topics and following the instructions, point by laborious time-consuming, multiple-reboot point. BUT I still have it in the back of my mind that there is a place in registry with a switch that enables/disables Restart. Meanwhile will compare contents of Boot.ini files see if anything is different there. Thanks. Anyone else out there had this problem before??? Andrew57 (2365)
187742 2003-10-31 00:06:00 Andrew57,

Are you looking for one (or both) of these Registry keys? Hmm be very careful using them and don't forget to backup your registry beforehand. (No responsibility taken by Babe B-) )

[HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop]
"AutoEndTasks"="1"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l]
"WaitToKillServiceTimeout"="1000"

Cheers, Babe.

187743 2003-10-31 00:22:00 Sorry, not those keys. I can control those via Xteq-Xsetup. I just have a vague memory of reading about this very problem somewhere and there is a key that specifically is on/off for Restarts inside Windows. Thanks anyway for your time. Andrew57 (2365)
