| 187667 | 2003-10-30 06:32:00 | Neither did I say explicitly I was a labourite Thomas :) The current trend of OSH legislation and the like to protect people from themselves is quite ludicrous. It smacks of the same nanny type attitudes that says all children are equal and shouldnt be seen to fail in anything. As a keen lone tramper type I say stand up and be counted, look after ones self and be self reliant. Stand up and be counted....... thats why I dont hide anonymously behind pseudonyms etc. (Im not necessarily getting at you by the way when I say that) That doesnt mean I dont believe in mutual support philosophies, or that I do believe in extreme right wing freedoms without social responsibilities. Humans are too complex to be put into simple ideological compartments. Rational beings?????????? Just look at Iraq and tell me what is rational about that. To the Nazis the holocaust was quite rational. Good job this thread isnt directly about a computer problem or we would have whatsisname, I forget now, complaining. :) |

I must admit though, that the current thinking, some time ago would have you believe that the Earth was flat. Now I'm over 60 years old I still seek knowledge. I'm fully aware that I don't know everything. After all.... If the water pipe bursts you call a Plumber. If the car needs fixing you call a Mechanic ( or an Auto Electrician ) For me I just try to keep up with the latest computer stuff both hardware and software. Remember when you went to a Doctor (GP) when you were sick? Now the Doctor will refer you to a Specialist. We get like ENT (Ear, Nose, Throat.) I guess it won't be long before we get Left Nostril and Right Nostril people. It just seems to me in general conversation these days everyone has to be PC ( politically correct ) This hasn't YET become law regarding computers. After all.... I'm not considered RACIST if I don't like Apple Macs. If I prefer WinXP over Linux it doesn't make me wrong. If I buy a Ford as opposed to a Holden or own a Mazda (as I do) am I wrong? Yep.... I can't afford a Jag yet. People have to make their own choices and they do. As far as I am concerned provided they are within the law of this country I have no complaints. |

Elephant we are taxed on the whim of some politician, you name it and they will tax it,if you had a chance to avoid that tax, would you?Remembering you would break a law if you did so. >People have to make their own choices and they do. | 187671 | 2003-10-30 08:43:00 | Yes we are taxed. The Governments of the day raise or lower the tax rate. I just pay it. I guess I just get back to the Law again. Tax avoidance ( within the law ) is fine by me. Let the law makers make the laws. If the law makers don't do it very well then there are going to be loopholes. This reminds me of the Second World War where Germans dropped Mines in the channel. These mines had booby traps for the poor persons trying to disarm them. Politicians make the law. The Courts interpret the law. The Police and others enforce the law. There are two I noticed recently. Decisions by Magistrates or Judges. One person had viewed images of porn on a school computer and had been found guilty of POSSESSION of these images. Almost certainly these images will be sitting in a cache on the hard drive if they were viewed. I have no sympathy for anyone looking for child porn least of all a teacher. Another case where a Judge handed down a cumulative sentence as opposed to a concurrent sentence for multiple offending. I fully applaud this. What do you think? A life sentence ( 10-14 years) for ONE person killed. Kill FOUR people then why not make it 40 years? |

| 187672 | 2003-10-30 08:49:00 | No, Powa, this thread really is on the original theme of the irony of capitalist Bill Gates exercising his personal freedom to restrict the freedom of others in computing :) You have to be patient, the wheel in this topic will eventually come full circle. You and I are not really far apart Thomas, I just like to have a dig and expose the ironies in life. Just consider this, think how successful the New Right have been in teaching the sub-creatures, by example, that it is quite all right to grab things for oneself without due regard to society. So now these tycoons (some of whom commit corporate fraud on a large scale), build or develop multimillion dollar residences for themselves and fellow capitalists now have to fortify those properties like inside-out prisons to keep out the unter menschen crims they have so well trained. :D Years ago we used to leave our doors open, without any worries. I used to leave the keys in my car overnight in the little village I lived in. |

| 187673 | 2003-10-30 09:02:00 | Hmmmm. If anarchy rules then my mind set would change. Anarchy----- There are no rules. The only rule would be survival. To survive you need knowledge and the will to to survive. No rules then---- Fine... I take it that if I am bigger and more armed than you are, and, have more will to survive and there ARE no rules then you are happy if I kill you? No Queensberry rules???? Watch out for tomorrow as I MAY whip YOUR can of baked beans. :-) Wan't a game of Chess? Forget using your Knight as a Queen!!! The rules say different. I think we have to live by the law of the country we live in. When in Rome........ |

| 187674 | 2003-10-30 10:54:00 | There is one small problem though with all these rules and laws, the people who make them and the people who enforce them. They're just like you or me or Bill Gates, they have warts and pimples and some will even have personality disorders (in the case of the politico's some would say they all have disorders ;) ), so, who checks and balances the crudy laws when an elected Govt' is obviously there because the other lot are weaker. Oh, the courts I hear some say, too late for some or misguided faith in the judiciary in other cases and just too poor to get the best out the system in others. As alluded to before, it takes independent people with help from the press to thrawt the more draconian excesses that politicians and big business try to hang around our necks (yes I see the irony Terry and anarchy can't stop it either). What I fear is that general apathy or pure ignorance will rule in the case of Trusted Computing and the so called Next Generation Secure Computing Base that Bill and his mates are trying to/will implement and it will just roll over us all. And, if successfull with TC and NGSCB what next. Be sure its already on the drawing board. They're lining up for new ways to guide you into their money making machines on the Net, bye bye freedom to surf. Cheers Murray P |
