187760 2003-10-29 22:53:00 I am having problems with a busy CPU. I have a program installed called MPower 1.2 from Mindbeat.com that monitors CPU usage and RAM in the title of the active window. After running the computer for an hour or more the CPU usage increases, sometimes to almost 100% when nothing is actually being done. Although this is happening the computer runs OK with the biggest exception of open or changing folders. Opening a folder can take as long as 30 seconds. This also happens using Windows Explorer. Something is making the CPU work but I can't figure out what. Running win98 450Mhz 12 gig hard 70% full. 256 RAM. Thanks for any help. davidprice (4799)
187761 2003-10-29 23:09:00 Have you run a check for Spyware and Viruses?

See spybot.info and download SpyBot S&D, and goto housecall.antivirus.com for an Online virus scan.

If you hit Ctrl + Alt + Del, what apps show up in there?

187762 2003-10-29 23:14:00 Hi David . A little more info would help us help .

How long has this happened for and what changes to your system have you made just before that time, eg, OS patches, new software, configuration changes . Are you hooked up to the net or a network . What processes are running in the backround Ctrl + Alt + Del to bring up the task manager?

Make sure your anti virus software is up to date and run it . Get SpyBot from here ( . safer-networking . org/index . php?lang=en&page=start" target="_blank">www . safer-networking . org), if you don't already have it and run it as well .

Empty your internet cache and temp files by right clicking your drive in my computer or explorer, selct properties and choose disck cleanup on the first tab then defragment .

Do you have Find Fast (MS Office) enabled? Go to Control Panel and disable it if yo have .

HTH

187763 2003-10-30 00:44:00 Lots of questions... Couldn't tell you when it started or what I was installing at the time. Have a few programs running. Explorer, Datemanager,Mdiag, Ivi95 (anti virus), Acrord3, Mpower (ram & cpu usage), Loadqm, Point32, Stimon, Q3dctl,Mdm, Rnaapp, Ikeymain (keyboard function). Invircible is my anti virus. Very confident it is working 98%. Ran Ad-ware, showed up hotbar which I quarantined, deleted. That may be the culprit. Not networked. Am receiving that email, virus, worm in Outlook about Microsoft patch. Haven't opened attachment but get constant email and then returns from undelivered email. Cpu problem was there before the email thing though. Hope this helps. davidprice (4799)
187764 2003-10-30 02:19:00 Grab a copy of Taskinfo (www.iarsn.com). It will give you amount of cpu used by each programme running. bmason (508)
187765 2003-10-30 02:51:00 Also go to Pacs Portal ( . pacs-portal . co . uk/startup_pages/startup_full . htm" target="_blank">www . pacs-portal . co . uk) which lists most of the startup and running processes, around, which ones you can do without and which ones to kill .

You can give date manager the chop straight away as its spyware . Run SpyBot as well as Adaware .

187766 2003-10-30 03:13:00 If you want to confirm that Hotbar has been completely removed have a look at this page (simplythebest.net) for the registry keys to check. Susan B (19)
