| 187639 | 2003-10-29 10:39:00 | Hi there Recently purchased a downloadable product (audiobook) from the internet and was happy with that. Browsed the site and found another title of interest. There was the offer, much like hard copy book clubs, that you get the title for free if you sign up for a subscription. I only went to have a look to see what was involved, and found that my initial purchase credit details were stored, and they had automatically signed me up for the subscription (which I don't want at this stage). A couple of emails later, with automated responses, saying I can cancel, but need to phone them between certain hours EDT time to cancel, I would like to know a) How come the credit card details are stored? ( I did look at previous posts and they did have the padlock icon etc) b) If they can take my money via the internet, why can't they stop taking it? It isn't the cost of a call, it is scheduling a time when I can call from home and they are open - I am not good on getting up in the middle of the night. Thanks if you can help. |

Visa/MCard advise 'best practices' and this company your talking about is certainly not following those as for a start a toll free or alternative free mechanism is supposed to be available plus when the recurring payment as set up you should have been asked / advised payment dates. I would be surprised if cc details for a recurring payment is held in a cookie because how will the business extract this info each month? Some info is held on your PC if you have something like an e-wallet but the intention of these are for one off payments. If a payment is disputed (you say you didnt authorise this payment) then the amount will be charged back and you have all the rights with electronic payments as theres no signature or method to authenticate the cardholder unless done via a 3DSecure or similar protocol. |
