187629 2003-10-29 10:34:00 I've just installed Zone Alarm Pro 4 on our older computer (Win98se) to stop certain programs like kazaa chewing up the bandwidth, and to stop some people from visiting certain sites just in case.

Anyway, I've passworded it and logged out. That works ok, and you need to enter a password to change settings or close the program via normal methods. But then I decided to be clever and try killing it via the task manager. And what do you know, it terminates no worries. Now thats kind of a worry because if one of the people in my house grows a brain, they can shut it down like that and be back to free surfing. Or they could stop it from starting up via msconfig, and then reboot.

So where does that leave me? Does anyone know how that could be stopped, or should I be looking into restricting bandwidth at the Router? Does anyone know how to only allow a certain amount of bandwidth for a specific computer connected to my Dynalink RTA300 ADSL Router via ethernet?

187630 2003-10-29 10:42:00 I don't think that was a very good heading for your post. I suspect most other firewalls would be the same. I am sorry but off hand I can not help much and 98 is pretty limited. mikebartnz (21)
187631 2003-10-29 10:44:00 Did you try surfing after shutting down via task manager I think you wont have any DNS services on that PC, Also I once used msconfig disable Zone Alarm opps no DNS services again, you can browse by IP though. This was with the free version on 98se. I would hope that the paid version is as just as robust, if not more.
Also if you decide to uninstall make sure you go to Zone Labs site and read the uninstall instructions for your OS. A incorrect uninstall can mean a reload of your OS.

187632 2003-10-29 11:06:00 No even with it disabled by task manager I can still surf to sites as normal by typing the web address.

Zone Alarm Pro, is supposed to have web filtering in it, and by that definition if it can't filter properly it aint protecting the kids if you can shut it down so easily. - any newbie could do it.

Is it possible to disable the taskmanager unless you unlock it somehow?

187633 2003-10-29 11:13:00 I know ISA does bandwidth limiting. But thats going way over the top for your needs.

Try http://www.netlimiter.com/ it might be more suitable for you.

187634 2003-10-29 11:25:00 Try Agnitum Outpost pro.

Apart from being able to password protect settings etc, you can set it to run in "invisible mode" which prevents people from shutting it down.

187636 2003-10-29 17:27:00 You'd be better off using a product like Norton Internet Security, which will do all you ask and provide firewall protection as well. But you could stick with ZA and get something like CyberPatrol, which will provide the additional features you require Greg S (201)
187637 2003-10-29 20:30:00 This is an interesting question. Maybe it is so that Zone Alarm is not an adequate firewall when it comes to the possibility of shutting it down from the Task Manager.

In any other case I would recommend ZoneAlarm above Norton Personal Firewall. Why? As a software developer I have discovered many Internet/Communication services which are definitely disabled because of Norton Personal Firewall. Among them many completely wanted, acceptable and totally benigne communications.

However. I must agree with the problem of being able to disable the firewall via the task manager. A firewall should preferably always be protected against shutdown by a password from the administrator of the computer.

My personal recommendation would be to e-mail ZoneAlarm and describe the above mentioned problem. They will probably provide a future version which will solve your problem....

Personally I have much negative experience with Norton. For example, an earlier version of Norton Anti Virus detected my Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files as viruses at startup. Inoculation was not available as an option, so I was forced to remove the above mentioned files. The result, it was not possible to start windows (my Operating System) without reinstalling the Config.sys and Autoexec.bat from a diskette borrowed from a friend...

Good luck with your firewall protection... Our kids are always a step ahead.... =)

187638 2003-10-29 20:45:00 on the older versions of ZA it used to be that if you ended ZA processes it would kill your net connection. basicly a protection method in case a virus/worm/trojen tried to get around it. in fact it was a pain...if ZA didn't uninstall corectly it would kill your net connection untill you manuall deleted the last remaining parts of it.

mayby they stuffed something up with the latest ver????
unfortunatly i don't run ZA4 so i can't really test it but a simply test you could do for me to check something out....... remove IE from the programs list, kill ZA processes then try to access the net with IE. see if it will or not.
