187615 2003-10-29 13:35:00 Helloo,

Well robsonde, thats right i was with them as well in 99 and back then it was NCMT operating under Carrich umbrella!

From the begining the quality of managment was very evident .
Our classes did not start until 2 weeks, when they finally started moving desks & chairs into the building . Until then we played "tag" everyday and used bean bags!!

They were so far behind the course (Diploma in Comp) that by year end most of the units were not completed . NZQA came knocking on doors and apparently told them they could not approve the units as being passed as it was all in shambles!

Halfway thru they were doing server upgrade, and apparently some dummy "system administrator" wiped all our home folders accidentally and all student projects/assignment etc . We had students lining up for "passes" for projects, many of them had not even started work and got free "A's"!!

The quality of tutotrs we had was another shock! . I had a one who would show us ICQ features (In 99 it was a craze) to voice chat, how to do music dowloads and decorating wallpapers instead of some real teaching . It was all crazyy and total chaos!

2 weeks before course completion all the tutors rushed thru all units and basically everyone had multiple resits and magically all exams/assignments/projects were marked and passed in 1 day!!
I never went for graduation . Some even had threatened legal action .

I regretted joing up with that institute but I finally got my Qualification from NZQA . I did work hard for it and was relieved to get it after loosing hope of getting one judging on the performance of the whole institute . Some of the students even walked away with "free" Diplomas!

It does not surprise me on How Carrich has sunk for good!

never managed to finish our NZ Diploma course

187616 2003-10-29 22:46:00 Hi,

I too had done some computer training at Carich .

I choose this because I was more hands on, and did not like the idea of doing heaps of NZQA material (mostly not related to computers) at Polytech, where I tried for the first time to do a NCCL3 and didn't pass successfully .

At the time (in Hamilton) 2001, I was the second set of new students to start my NZQA course for a NCCL4 course and a diploma was not introduced until 2002 when they brought out the diploma . This appears though that in Hamilton was late in introducing this . . . .

Now Im at Uni, struggling learning programming for the first time to get a degree . It is ashame that this has happened .

Kia kaha .

"The business owned by the country's new entrepreneur of the year faces closure after authorities said it received public funding to which it was not entitled. "

"Taurima was named Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year last week and was yesterday guest speaker at the NZ First convention in Christchurch. "

"Named Maori Businesswoman of the Year in 1999, Taurima was also selected as one of five emerging leaders to attend the Knowledge Wave Leadership Forum earlier this year. "

187618 2003-10-30 00:11:00 Well the website seems to be Alive (http://www.carich.co.nz)

Maybe the webmasters werent allowed into the building!
Guess PC Company was lucky to have the webmasters get into the server room just in time to put up the notice.

Tis a sad day to see this happening especially when poor students are affected

187619 2003-10-30 00:24:00 I entered the NZOOM WebChallenge recently and the main prize was a course from Carich. Luckily I didn't win but I feel sorry for the people who did CamelTrader (4745)
187620 2003-10-30 01:43:00 It wasn't really all the fault of Carich. The woman in charge was quite right in saying that the government is also to blame quite a bit. Why? well simply becuase of the Fee Cap for PTE's Students attending a PTE can ONLY get a MAXIMUM of $6.500 for course fees and $1,000 for course related costs from student loans. This severley limits what a PTE can offer and the the equipment it can purchase. A polytechnic or University student has NO limit to how much they can get from student loan, this means that a polytech or uni can run course that cost (if the so desire) $100,000.00 or more (not that they do, but they could) this means they get more income to purchase more equipment and offer course that NO PTE could ever hope to offer.

Now I'm not saying all PTE's are a good thing as there are many rubbish ones out there, but again that is where to government needs to enforce a quality of standard which it doesn't at the moment. Often I find that learning at a PTE is better than a Polytech or Uni but that is just my opinion.
