187624 2003-10-29 09:29:00 Hi All,

Does anyone know of a program that will constantly back up an image of a HDD (to another HDD) in the back ground? WHat I am trying to find is a program that will make a complete mirror image of a partition and will constantly update it as things are changed on the master partition. I'd prefer if it could be done while the screensaver is running.

I've treid Acronis True Image and Power Quest Drive Image and they seem to create a large back up file which can only be restored by using their program

187625 2003-10-29 10:56:00 Im not sure if this is what you what but in Novembers issue of PC World NZ there is a article on backing up, even gives you the ftp site to download everything, it uses a batch file, winzip( which you will have to download seperatly and pay for after the trail period) and some other free utilities. then you could use scheduler to run the batch file at a certain time. beama (111)
187626 2003-10-29 15:23:00 If you really want to "CONSTANTLY" backup your drive you could consider setting up a RAID (RAID: Redundant Array of Independent Drives). There are various modes of RAID, but RAID 1 basically uses two drives and duplicates everything from one drive to the other (ie when you click the save button it write the file to both drives so you have a constant backup if either one of the drives failes). When reading files it reads off whichever drive is less busy so you also get a performance increase.

RAID can be done with a hardware or a software controller (Windows 2000 includes some RAID software built in).

Have a look at www.techtutorials.com

187627 2003-10-29 20:27:00 I should have mentioned that I dont have the hardware for RAID. I didnt think RAID could be set up with software only.

Thanks for all the advice. I'll read the article in the current edition of NZ PC WOrld

187628 2003-10-29 22:19:00 Goback will do that but it means that your HDD will be continually active if you do a lot of changes at one time not good for speed eg gamers etc which is why i use drive image these days kiwibeat (304)
