188273 2003-10-31 22:17:00 Hi There,

Each time I startup windows ME some program attempts to dial out. I have used System Mechanic to check out for programs in startup and registry and nothing is there that needs to dial.
How do I find what or who is trying to dial out to the internet and how do I stop it?
Thanks in anticipation.

188274 2003-10-31 22:46:00 adaware or spy bot with the latest updates (spybot) should find and deal to it
I prefer spybot personal preference only though. do a search on google for the one of your choice.

188276 2003-11-02 19:31:00 I had this - go to IE/tools/internetoptions/advanced and scroll down to security. Find "Check for publishers certificate revocation", and if it is checked then uncheck it. best of luck.

If you install a firewall it will tell you what program is trying to dial out and prevent it doing so. Some good free firewalls available are ZoneAlarm, Kerio and Outpost.

188278 2003-11-03 06:30:00 I installed IE6 last week, and it caused problems with Nortons 2003, and also kept trying to dial up every time I started the puter. I found part of the problem in the options of ie6. It had check for ie updates ticked. and once I unticked that, that part of the problem went. I have since uninstalled ie6 as I didn't get rid of the problem with nortons, and didn't have time to work through the hassles. supergran (108)

My response above was also caused by NAV 2003, and what I posted was the specific fix from the Symantec website.

188280 2003-11-03 08:08:00 Tony F, the error message I kept getting was something about ccapp, and it sent me somewhere in the Nortons site to reinstall it, which I did, then as soon as I rebooted, Nortons antivirus wasn't running again, so I just uninstalled Ie6. I will try again later in the week, have written down what you wrote, and see how I go then. Thanks :8} supergran (108)
188281 2003-11-03 10:03:00 definitely nortons - "common client application" happened after updating ccap via liveupdate - reinstalled norton then havent updated ccap in liveupdate and no more problems (using opera 7.2) xerxes3 (4810)
188282 2003-11-03 10:06:00 symantic common client app is the culprit - had this problem with opera 7 after updating it - reinstalled norton then deselected ccap update in liveupdate - no more dialouts xerxes3 (4810)
