The real physics of plug holes doesnt give that result, forces other than coriolis are predominant. It is a fact though that your runner beans will climb up the bean sticks with opposite rotation to that in the northern hemisphere. It is one way of finding out which hemisphere you are in if you get disoriented, look at your runner beans :) |

English or Dutch runner beans rotate clockwise when viewed from above. Go into the garden and look if anyone doubts the veracity of my ramblings. We used to have a physics holiday undergraduate working in our lab once who was convinced a right hand thread became a left hand thread if it was viewed from the other end. |

| 188309 | 2003-11-01 09:08:00 | Well actually I was thinking of plugholes & runner beans (& still haven't worked out where the Kiss Me Kate movie comes into this) But if you want to start a new thread for people old enough to remember it, tell me who was the other man who sang it with James Whitmore. And yes Terry Porritt , I'm glad you mentioned the water down the plughole, as I forgot to notice the supposed difference while in my scungy London accomodation in the 70's, and it's bothered me ever since I returned home. Now I can purge this worry forever. As for the runner beans, they weren't an obvious feature in UK cities, so I guess I'll just have to keep believing those in my garden are twining correctly as long as they produce. |
