188709 2003-11-02 09:17:00 Hey…

Don’t know if this is a common question or not… but anyway

Is it possible to move the SwapFile (PageFlie-what have you) To the outside of the disk…
And does this make any difference to the performance of the machine

If so – where where do I begin

188710 2003-11-02 10:20:00 yes, either make a seperate partition for it or use an app such as nortons speed disk which can move the swapfile to the front of the disk.

as far as speed increase goes. it all depends on how much you use the swap file. those that use it a lot will can a fair amount of speed, tho your milage may vary.

188712 2003-11-02 10:49:00 if you have speed disk then simply look at the disk map, the swap file should already be at the top. if not run norton optoimiser then speeddisk. tweak'e (174)
188713 2003-11-04 22:07:00 if you have 2 HDD the swap file is even better off on the 2nd one kiwibeat (304)
188714 2003-11-04 23:27:00 not always. its best when its on the FASTEST one ;-) tweak'e (174)
188715 2003-11-04 23:51:00 true but two read heads are better than one especially during times of intensive activity kiwibeat (304)
188716 2003-11-05 00:11:00 Oh... (without Speed disk)

You could of course just right click my computer, and Click Performance Tab, and where the page file exists, just type in 0 and click the set button and then type a value for your page file somewhere else...

can you explain that a bit clearer??? you can change the file location ie what drive its on etc easy enough but you can't change the location on the disk without a third party app (afaik).

188718 2003-11-05 00:29:00 Oh for real operating systems .... RT11, for the PDP11 (and OS/8 for the PDP8 before that) had a command: CREATE /ALLOCATE:<size> /START:<block number> <filename.ext> .

Easy, though the PDP/8 version had the minor problem that the size was in decimal and the postion was in octal (or the other way around ;-)).
