188633 2003-11-02 06:52:00 i have an internal dynalink 56kb/s modem. yet when i connect to clear net it will differ beetween 50.6 and 52kb/s. and when i download my acid loops or in fact anything it will be a pitiful 4.5kb/s. what would be a 10 min job is now a 2 1/2 HOUR job. and i like acid. 188634 2003-11-02 07:04:00 well 4.5kb/sec downloading speed is pretty good for a 56k user...
i'm on a 56k myself and my download speeds are always between 1-5kb/sec

the 50.6/52kb/sec modem connection is pretty good...i dont know what it means...but one thing for sure it doesnt mean u would download at 50-52kb/sec..

if you want a faster internet connection, get jetstream, it should be available from your isp, therefore you can get speeds of up to 125kb/sec or better...i dont have it so dont actually know...

cheers

188635 2003-11-02 07:26:00 You're kidding, right? Clear offering Jetstream? :D

Clear is associated with Telstra (hence TelstraClear), so would never offer Jetstream as an option.

Anyway, if your modem is connecting to your ISP at around 52Kbps (Kilobits per second), that is very good - most people are lucky to get even 48Kbps.

However, note that Kilobits per second (Kbps) is different from KiloBytes per second (KBps). There are eight bits to a byte, so doing some quick maths, 52Kbps / 8 = 6.5KBps. That is probably the best you'll ever hope to get from dial-up internet, but download speeds between 4 and 5 KBps are much more common.

Note that any other activity that uses the internet while you are downloading samples will slow your downloads - so try using a download manager to queue up some downloads and then leave your computer downloading overnight.

188636 2003-11-02 07:31:00 well i must be kidding if they dont..
i only thought they did as a majority of isps offer high speed internet so yeah...
but guess its a different meaing from highspeed and jetstream i guess..

Clear do provide DSL.

188638 2003-11-02 07:54:00 the thing is when i first start downloading stuff it is around 23 Kbps then slows to 11 Kb, then 6 Kb, then settles at 4 Kb. our win 95 computer died a week ago leaving us with a 28 Kb external modem. i have no specific driver so i plan to use windows default driver. this is of relevance as i heard you can use two modems simultaneously to speed up internet. can this be done? also, i plan on downloading linux on our second partition and as i run WinXP i have to download service packs! Megaman (344)
188639 2003-11-02 08:01:00 i would rather download the service pack than linux..
its nearly 3-4 cds worth linux is...well if u went and got it off trademe u get 4-5 cds so i guess u gotta download it all if u plan to..

and 2 modems i dont think would work...

are you saying ur using a 56k modem or a 28kb modem?

and sometimes when u first start a download..u can have speed bursts meaning some speeds can be out of this world....like for a second or two it can be a 20kb/sec...so maybe thats what ur getting...

if u tell us what modem it is, maybe one of us can tell u the specific website where to download the thanfully small sized driver..

188640 2003-11-02 08:02:00 I'm sure Clear provide DSL, but not through Telecom's Jetstream I would think.

It is quite normal for downloads to start off at high speeds and slow down to settle at 4/5KBps.

It is also true that you can 'piggy back' modems to get higher speeds, but it is reasonably complicated to do so, and you also require two phone lines. Not to mention your ISP would have to allow you to use your account from two different lines simultaneously, and this may generate extra payments.

188641 2003-11-02 08:07:00 clear charges $2.50 a hour for double using same id/passwords at same time..

i did it once at a m8s..2 lines and stuff as we wanted to play games but didnt have network so we just used isp...
and bill came oppsssssssss....thank god it was only for 3 hours...
we didnt do it again..

IE dosn't report speeds very well, also it depends on what oyur downloading and how compressable it is.

> i heard you can use two modems simultaneously to speed up internet

yes but as far as i know no isp in nz offically supports dualling modems.
