188521 2003-11-01 23:56:00 Hi,
I've setup a RedHat Server to test websites etc on before going live & everything is working as it should except for connecting to my websites from my windows machines.
Samba is working well along with file & printer sharing both ways but I can't connect to the websites on the linux box from windows XP unless connected to the net.
I can't connect over the lan, I have to connect to the net & straightaway I'm into the websites on the Server.
The only other options I can find in IE6 is a direct connection by serial or parallel, which doesn't work anyway.
Anyone know what I have done wrong? I'd really appreciate some help as it defeats the purpose of the whole thing if I've got to be connected to the net all the time, probably a setting in the IE connections but i can't seem to work it out.
Thanks a lot.

188522 2003-11-02 00:09:00 Have you tried getting to the website on your server with your server's IP address &/or server name????

(that should work in IE)(I do not think that IE likes "localhost" Please correct me if I am wrong)

188523 2003-11-02 00:25:00 Thanks stu,
sorry I should have said I was trying to connect using IP address & box name with no luck.
But I've solved it now, all I had to do was change a setting in dialup properties from "Always dial default" to "Dial whenever a network connection is not available"
Works fine now
Thanks

188524 2003-11-02 00:32:00 What you need is a routing for the local network, so that a host doesn't doesn't use the modem as its gateway.

Try the route command to see the routes known at the moment. route --help should give you the command you need to enter. Have a look at the HOWTOs ... they explain it all very well. :D

(It will be something like "route -add net 192.168 gw eth0", but of course it has to be exact, so check the )

There will be an entry for the default " *" which makes any IPs to go through the modem.

188526 2003-11-02 10:53:00 In IE, set it to connect only if no LAN connection is present.

Click Tools
Internet Options

Click on the connections tab.
