188478 2003-11-01 11:16:00 Hi there

I finally got around to making up a Smoothwall PC to act as my home network router and firewall, and I can't for the life of me get my Dynalink ALE070 USB modem to work .

The connection (green LED) flashes but never links up .

When the smoothie box is launching it says that is has detected the Globespan Virata Modem (if you read the white writing fast enough), so I know that the USB card I put in the old box is working, and the modem's power light is operational .

Can anyone suggest anything? < looks to -=JM=-, resident Smoothwall expert ;) >

188479 2003-11-02 03:37:00 I think that most usb modems are Winmodems and therefore not to happy with Linux.
Please someone prove me wrong?.

188480 2003-11-02 04:24:00 Hiya rcmb, my modem is external, and adsl. I think "Winmodems" relate to internal PCI 56k cards?

188481 2003-11-02 05:12:00 Have you checked your modem is supported. It sounds like USB is working if I can read the device name, but I think USB modems still need a driver.

Find out what chip you modem uses and head over to http://www.smoothwall.org , goto community -> forums, and have a look at the HCL (hardware compatability list).

188483 2003-11-02 20:26:00 Well a few weeks back my wife had her work computer set up here at home with a usb asdl modem, jetstream etc.
Worked ok with Windoze 2000, but when I borrowed the modem to try on my Mandrake box it was no go.
Had a look at the DSE website (it was a DSE branded modem)and it said no Linux support.
Sorry I can be a bit more positive.....
Try the modem vendors website to check Linux support.

188484 2003-11-02 20:41:00 Google brought up this:
www.google.com

And I noticed this:
lists.debian.org

Who's to say though that there arent user drivers. I too would recommend googl'ing more and getting the Beta of SmoothWall!

Found this too:
www.dynalink.co.nz

188485 2003-11-02 23:17:00 Thanks for the advice guys . I have been Googling most of last night and basically my problem is with there not being Linux drivers for the modem .

I was sort of thinking that although Smoothwall is Linux based, I wouldn't have to mess about with somehow installing a separate driver for it .

To be honest I haven't any clue on how to load a driver even if I found one, onto Smoothwall . It just boots up to a login screen on the box itself, giving the option to log on as root, setup or admin . The setup and admin screens don't offer any help, and the root login is all text based DOS-like commands .

I can access the html type interface using another PC over the LAN, I cannot see how to import drivers .

I basically just wanted to get my net connection off my main PC so that the other PC could access the net without drawing resources from the main one . I think I will just get a router/switch for ADSL and see if I can sell my USB ADSL modem .

Cheers

188486 2003-11-02 23:24:00 Jester, you could try browsing/asking at OCNZ (http://forums.overclockers.co.nz/) as they have a few people using and very clued up on Smoothwall. Susan B (19)
