188463 2003-11-01 09:32:00 Hi,

I had to reset my computer after it hung - but when it restarted there was no graphics display. I've tested both the graphics card and monitor and they work fine in another computer.

Computer Specs: Athlon 2800+, ASUS V600 MB, 2x120GB SATA HD etc

The computer seems to start normally - with no warning beeps etc, but obviously doesn't get into Windows since pushing the power button does nothing (auto shutdown)

Is there anything else that I could try before I contact the dealer, all the parts are still under wauranty - but I like to know what i'm talking about before I take parts back to the dealer.

Unfortunately I dont have a spare PCI or AGP graphics card to try. Are there any other parts that could be causing problems?

thanks,
Nic

188464 2003-11-01 09:36:00 Does the other computer you tested your video card in not have a video card of its own?

Do you get nothing on the screen at all after turning the computer on? It sounds like the card might possibly not be plugged in properly.

188465 2003-11-01 09:44:00 Have you tried booting off a bootable floppy?

Do you get any output onto the monitor at all?

This before windows tries to start.

Do you get just one beep (normal)?

Very good point.

188467 2003-11-01 09:55:00 not all pc's beep on boot up.

it also could be ram. a lot of pc's won't boot without ram and motherboard still works eg you can turn it on an off.

188468 2003-11-01 21:15:00 There is no beep when it starts up. The graphics card should be seated properly, since it is pushed in firmly and locked in.

The computer had frozen four times last night before finally refusing to restart. If the RAM is faulty the MB should beep (I had incompatable RAM when I first bought it).

Shouldn't it at least show the post screen, even if the RAM is not working? I'll try switching RAM modules with the other machine to see if that helps.

And the other computer has onboard graphics...

188469 2003-11-01 21:43:00 I'm inclined to go with Tweak'e on this one. If you have 1 stick and it has failed dramatically, could stop cpu doing it's thing and giving those beeps.
At this stage, leave it to the supplier as it is under warranty. If they think you have been "fiddling", it may give them an excuse to step out of the warranty by saying the fault was caused by your fiddling. So don't mention swapping boards :)

not all pc's will do that. some will just not go at all. you can hit the on button and it will fire the psu up and mobo fans will run but you will get nothing on screen at all. monitor won't even turn on.

if its easy enough just swap over the ram to see.

188471 2003-11-01 21:44:00 This sounds a bit weird - I had the same problem a few months ago, nothing displayed on my screen at all, but no beeps (my computer would normally beep). I put in another video card and everything worked fine; put the original back in and same thing. I decided my video card was fried so bought a new one. Now I wonder if that card still works, as you seem to have the same problem but you say it works in another machine.

188472 2003-11-01 21:49:00 oops, re-read post and seems like you were the one to assemble. In that case, go with the RAM first, it is easier to swap out. That will leave you with Motherboard and CPU failure. If they are from the same supplier, send back as-is. Quite often, one takes out the other. So you may change CPU and MOBO will stuff it :)
I take it your power light comes on OK and/or hear drive start spinning up?
