188664 2003-11-02 08:46:00 It is no problem to boot two or more distributions of Linux with LILO or GRUB. I currently have both RH7.3 and RH9 - all I did was copy the kernel file of the second OS into the first /boot directory and create appropriate entries in the boot loader plain text file. This method also works for using the same distributions with different kernels. JohnD (509)
188665 2003-11-02 08:50:00 Does anyone have any experience with SuSE? Because I haven't given it much thought, but it looks appealing, from the website at least. agent (30)
188666 2003-11-02 09:56:00 Not much af a linux person but give it time...

i created a 10 gig partition on a 40 gig drive with Partion Magic 8 and formated it to ext whatever....
I thought this might be a safer way then trying to do it using linux software that i didnt know and stuffing it all up...

Dont know about boot loaders but i have used both and prefered grub
have also tryed boot magic but prefered grub...

If you can't guess I am comfortable in the windows envoironment but do like some of they ways linux works... and would like to get to know more... but dont want to give the control to linux just yet...

188667 2003-11-02 10:49:00 Im going to be another to suggest RedHat 9. I used it for a long time before venturing off into other Distro's!

GRUB (Grand unified boot Loader) is brilliant, and looks a treat in RH9!!

If you are downloading, be careful that you dont corrupt them, as it is EXTREMELY easy to do unknowingly!

Ive had a bit of experience with previous versions of SuSE. It seemed good.... but RH was better IMHO!

Im also going to agree that Knoppix would be your best starting point, even if its just to make sure you can get the CD's alright (Im gonna recommend GetRight for the job).

Hope this helps

188668 2003-11-02 16:38:00 Be very wary of any of them. I have found that Things like modems, scanners and printers will not work.
I have tried Mandrake and SUsE and both install easily and there are no real problems until you have to find drivers. I recently tried SuSe pro. All six CD's of it. It's easy to use . But my mouse only worked sometimes, my external modem never worked, my scanner never worked. It identified my printer, but it still wouldn't work.
In the end I got fed up with having to boot windows XP whenever I wanted a print out or to use my modem. I have deleted it and am now exclusively on XP.

188669 2003-11-02 17:51:00 As chilling_silently said, knoppix would be a good starting point as it only boots of a cd. and yes, it does have x and kde. ilikelinux (1418)
188670 2003-11-02 19:47:00 Oh C'mon JJJJJ.....

Im sure he's heard of the missing driver myth by now...
To be honest, I've setup many a windows PC's, and have had lots more fun with Doze drivers than linux!

188671 2003-11-02 20:16:00 Yeah gotta agree, Chilling, Every Linux install I have ever done I have never needed to go and find any drivers, they are all on the Linux disks.... rmcb (164)
188672 2003-11-02 23:16:00 i have a cyclone computers computer. it wont jive me time to press a key, however when i wake it from hibernate it says press f8 for loadup options. i don't want to run it from cd as i have a 52x cd-rom and they are notorious for smashing cds. Megaman (344)
188673 2003-11-02 23:28:00 > on our new alive computer we dont have a memory test, just loads winxp. if you could tell me how to get to bios i would be happy.

Mine is pretty quick as well. After pressing the On switch try continually tapping the Delete key straight away until the BIOS menu comes up.
