2003-11-02 00:54:00 | My Windows 2002 has packed a sad and refuses to load, telling me the feature I wish to use can be found on OEM CD. Tried to re-install but get Error 1311 "Source File not found - MSWord\OFFICE1.CAB" Tried HP helpdesk, they don't want to know, the M$ Site doesn't appear to reference this altho I may be looking in the wrong place. Can anyone suggest how I can fix this one - I don't want to Restore unless it's as a last resource. Compaq Presario with XP Home edition and Works Suite 2002. | WalOne (4202) | |
2003-11-02 01:06:00 | Sorry, I meant WORD 2002 not Windows 2002! :(

2003-11-02 01:11:00 | You say you are running Windows XP, yet your problem is with Windows 2002? I am confused by this, as "Windows 2002" is the operating system for hand-held computers, not desktops or laptops. On the assumption that you meant Office (or Works) 2002, then look to Microsoft for the solution. support.microsoft.com Its directed at Windows 2000, but XP and 2000 are similar.

2003-11-02 02:02:00 | Enable viewing of system files, then search for "normal . dot" Delete (or rename to normal . old) all instances of the file . Word will recreate a new one on next startup . Its the default template thats loaded everytime Word is started, and it gets corrupted from time to time . Even reloading Word will not cure a corrupt normal . dot, and it gives a wide range of errors .

2003-11-02 02:12:00 | It looks as if the install is looking for the CAB files in the wrong place. Can you Browse to the correct place? | Graham L (2) | |
2003-11-02 03:08:00 | Thanks GF and Graham . Tried deleting normal . dot but on reboot it doesn't recreate; a search for Office1 . cab doesn't locate a file of that name . So I'm back to square one, but now without a normal . dot :) If I try to open a Word document, I get the page opened - I can read what's there, but that's when a window called "Windows Installer" pops up then "preparing to install", next "installing MS word feature", then, "the feature you are trying to use is on CD: insert Microsoft works 2002 disc - use feature from Works suite 2002" . The install starts, but then terminates with "Error 1311 Source file not found MsWord\Office1 . CAB" I know you said reloading wouldn't work, GF but I tried once again after deleting the normal . dot file in case . Anything else we can try do you think?

2003-11-02 03:47:00 | Thanks guys - I tried the M$ site you gave me GF, and simple as - there appears to be some conflict with security settings, and easiest resolved by copying the Office CD to HD, and running setup from there. And it worked! Thanks for your help - I hope I dodn't take up too much of your time.

2003-11-02 04:48:00 | Glad its fixed!. > Cough. Windows 2002 is windows xp. Only the successor to Windows 2000 Server (Windows 2002 Server)software was called that, not the desktop line of software as far as I can recall.
