188385 2003-11-01 04:51:00 It must've been a long time since Kerio released a full version that I know of, because I'm still using version 2.1.5 in Windows 98, but it would appear the beta v3 stage has passed, and Kerio is now onto version 4 beta, available for download here (www.kerio.com). According to the site, it is supported on all Windows platforms except Windows 95.

And so I will proceed to tell you some of the nifty new features :D

So far I have not been able to edit any firewall rules that are created - the only complaint I have as of yet.

However, I am sure that the new features will adequately make up for this.

First up, we have a brand new interface - it appears Kerio dumped the Kerio Administration Console style as seen in v3 beta, and have moved into a single system reminiscent of McAfee AntiVirus 6. Upon opening this interface, you are presented with an overview of the current connections. There are also tabs for an overview of statistics and settings. Not much has changed with the settings since v3, but they have now added password support to protect against unwanted changes.

Next up is the standard Network Security and System Security sections. Network Security is the area where you set your trusted areas, predefined network rules (such as ping, ICMP packets, DNS, DHCP, etc), and applications that are allowed network access. System Security is the application security, and this has been elevated somewhat - you can now set rules for when an application is starting, not only for when it has been modified or is starting another application.

Then comes the Intrusion Detection System, which you can configure on three different levels - high, medium, and low priority intrusions - whether to allow or deny actions. Logging is available for all three, plus for detection of port scans.

Finally, and this is my favourite new addition, there is now web filtering. This allows you to block advertising (based on word filtering, basically), block pop-up and pop-under windows, and also to block JavaScript, VBScript, and ActiveX. Moving on from here there is also privacy controls. Here you can filter cookies, referer information, and set private information to filter (such as credit cards, email addresses, phone numbers, PINs, registration numbers, or any other information you want to filter, really - my understanding is that this content is filtered out of packets/headers/information being sent out of your computer). However, you can set exclusions to the web and privacy filtering, and you are able to set each filter control for the exclusions).

Sorry for my rather bad descriptions and possibly confusing sentences, but I just feel that this is the biggest step in Kerio Personal Firewall yet.

Another thing I have noticed is that it says it is a 30 day trial, despite the fact Kerio Personal Firewall is available free for home use.

Last but not least, here (sal.neoburn.net) is a screenshot of Kerio Personal Firewall.

188387 2003-11-01 06:01:00 Okay, I've discovered where the filter rules are kept (thank goodness).

In the Network Security section, there is a button at the bottom labelled 'Packet filter...' next to the refresh button.

Now I just have to figure out why Outlook Express can't check my Hotmail emails... :D

188388 2003-11-01 06:17:00 Hmmmm.... 30 day trial......

Just downloaded and installed.

It looks good so I might just pay for it.

I have paid for others.

If I don't feel I'm getting my moneys worth then I will go back to version 2.1.4 which worked OK. No greeblies got in here anyway.

188392 2003-11-01 07:54:00 this software is awesome - no other words can describe. Am very impressed, for a beta version. falvrez (390)
188393 2003-11-02 00:07:00 Well that was a futile exercise - couldn't get it to work in XP grr - anyone else had installation problems? All that I got was an irritating pop-up message saying could not connect to service. Had to do a complete system restore to get ver 2 to run properly again. Greg S (201)
188394 2003-11-02 03:38:00 I didn't have those problems on XP Pro (I doubt Home version makes any difference), so I can only assume there is a system service that you have disabled that it needs to run?

Or something to that extent, anyway...
