189087 2003-11-04 05:49:00 When I click on Tools - Internet Options the following pops up "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator". I can access Internet options via the Control panel without this message coming up. I am running Windows XP and IE6. No one else uses the computer and am at a loss to understand how this happened, advice and suggestions welcome. jimjam (3259)
189088 2003-11-04 06:13:00 I dont know much about XP as I dont' use it, but I do remember seeing something about different users not having admin rights on the one computer, and there is a work around, but hopefully someone more up on that sort of stuff than me will come and help. supergran (108)
189089 2003-11-04 06:21:00 Hi,

There are two ways of solving this: (If you used the Group Policy Editor)and forgot where you went, then do this part first... if not, then skip these first 8 steps...

1. Go to Run
2 .Type gpedit.msc
3. Select User Configuration
4. Click Administrative Templates
5. Right Click and choose "Show Configured Policies Only"
6. Click Internet Explorer folder
7. Click Browser Menus
The setting should be revealed.....

Do as above steps from 1 -4 then
Click the Internet Explore Folder
Click the Browser Menus Folder
Look for: "Tools menu: Disable Internet Options..menu options"
Right click and choose Properties and then
Disable...

Should work...if not let me know....
Cheers!

Hi again,

If you get the following error message: "You do not have permission to perform this operation....."

then it is important that you are logged in as either "Administrator" or have "Administrative rights...."

Next step would be... MMC. (Microsoft Management Console)
Click Start
Go to Run
and type MMC

Let me know if you got this far or not....!
If you did not get this far (even with administrative rights or as the Administrator), then its more likely that you have disallowed access to the group policy console.

189093 2003-11-04 07:15:00 This gets more baffling, MMC says "there are no items to show in this view". In the meantime I have cobbled together a workaround by placing a shortcut to Internet Options on my desktop via the Control Panel. Sure would like to know what's going on though. jimjam (3259)
189094 2003-11-04 07:23:00 Hi,

No, thats fine! From that point, its a matter of adding "Group Policy" to the console by using the Menu Toolbar.......

1. File
2. Add\Remove Snap
3. Click Add button
4. Choose "Group Policy" from the list
5. Click Add
6. Finish
7. Close
8. Ok

Same steps as before (Second portion) of steps I showed you...
But hey, if your happy about the short cut and everythings fine, then good...

If this is too much for you, then just leave it as it is....
Cheers.
