My computer has started telling me
" MS Dos Prompt ! There is not enough memory available to run this program. Quit one or more programs and then try again"
It does this on seemingly random occasions after I have been playing Halo, surfing, using MS Word. Sometimes the warning mentions Norton NAV.
At the time I can have no other programs running to close down. I have tried disabling my startup programmes using msconfig and it still happens.
I have run NDD, scandisk, scanned for viruses and it still happens.
Any ideas ? Thanks for any help David

188928 2003-11-03 10:32:00 At a guess I would say its complaining that it has insufficient memory available in the first 640k block, an old DOS problem.

That suggests one of the applications is running in 16 bit mode and objecting to the fact there isn't enough contiguous memory down low.

Remember Bill Gates statement "640k will be enough memory for anyone".

Is there any older applications running that could be requiring 16 bit support?

Its also possible its a spurious error, caused by a driver or hardware incompatability.

188929 2003-11-03 10:37:00 I used to get this error myself on certain apps.

Try the following (Taken from the readme.txt file of an old copy of No$GMB):

UNDER WINDOWS:
Start the emulator, press ALT+ENTER to toggle from full-screen mode
to a small window (if necessary). Click the MSDOS symbol in upper left
of this window, select the last item (properties/options).
In the following screen, click 'Memory'.
In the 'Expanded Memory (EMS)' field, select either 'Automatic' or at
least 2048 (assuming that your biggest cartridge is sized 2048 KBytes).
If Windows complains about 'NOEMS' being specified in config.sys,
load the file C:\CONFIG.SYS into the editor and remove the word
'NOEMS' from the file, reboot the computer, and retry the above.
Otherwise press OK. If necessary use ALT+ENTER again, probably you
will also have to restart the emulator (use ALT+X to exit).

UNDER DOS:
Install EMM386 (your standard EMS memory manager) in your config.sys.
In general, add the following two lines at the head of C:\CONFIG.SYS
device=windows\himem.sys
device=windows\emm386.exe
Please refer to your DOS manual for details. The above lines are
windows user specific, I doubt that other people will have any
problems about EMS.
If you don't have a DOS manual, read the .TXT files in your \WINDOWS
directory or ask somebody who knows a bit more about computers.
If you already had EMM386 installed in config.sys, remove the word
'NOEMS' from config.sys.

Does it only happen with one or two specific apps, or does it happen on random?

188930 2003-11-03 10:57:00 i take it you already have done the "ram largerthan 512meg fix" ??? tweak'e (174)
188931 2003-11-03 20:30:00 try cacheman and adjust memory settings or uninstall as many startup programs as you can office and nortons uses up lots of resources ;failing all that increase your virtual memory settings or get rid of 256 megs of your ram i have 512 megs and rarely use all of it kiwibeat (304)
188932 2003-11-03 20:55:00 try to keep number of items on tyhe desktop to a minimum eg make a folder and put all your applications shortcuts into it helps

www.wugnet.com

I also use startman to disable as much as I can at startup
or you can do it manually
"Select Start, Run, type

msconfig

and click OK. In the resulting System Configuration Utility dialog box, click the Startup tab to display a list of all programs that start whenever Windows 98 starts. Deselect the pesky one (making certain you know which one it is), then click OK. The next time you start Windows, that program is nowhere in sight. "

188935 2003-11-03 22:56:00 Thanks for your suggestions
I can't open the msdos prompt --- I get the not enough memory error.
Chill What do you mean by Start the emulator? I have enabled config.sys containing device=windows\highmem.sys & device=\emm386.exe but no help
Tweak'e What's the "ram larger than 512 meg fix"?
Kiwibeat I'm working my way through your suggestions

188936 2003-11-03 23:19:00 The fix for your problem is here (support.microsoft.com)

As tweak'e spotted. you have a large amount of RAM on Windows 98SE.

That OS was not designed to use that amount of RAM, and there is a fix at the above link for it, your error message is exactly what you would see.
