| 188869 | 2003-11-03 05:27:00 | 1. Windows 98. I can’t get Defrag to work. I have shut down the Screensaver and Norton anti virus, but I can’t get past 0% progress on Defrag. 2. Windows 98/Outlook Express 5. When I boot up, the Dial Up connection box immediately appears, which I have to cancel and then cancel the Interruption box which follows. 3. Windows 98. Often refuses to shut down. |

| 188871 | 2003-11-03 05:40:00 | 1: Try pausing the 'Task Scheduler" by clicking on the icon in the right-hand side of your task bar at the bottom. 2: Either update to IE6 (which includes an improved version of Outlook Express) or go into MSConfig (I think!) and look at the option of disabling the dial up connection on start up. Think you can also go into the registry (be careful) and stop it starting up on boot up. 3: Go to windows update -- there is a patch/fix there for exactly this problem (along with numerous other patch/fixes)! |

| 188872 | 2003-11-03 06:27:00 | Boot into safe mode to do your defrag. Go into internet properties and untick dial up connection always/when not present to stop it dialing up. Edit your start-up programs to a minimum. Don't eat tinfoil. |

| 188873 | 2003-11-03 13:49:00 | So THAT'S why I can't get defrag to go past 0% either , no matter how many hours it's been going.... My Win98SE has IE6 & all the latest patches. Admittedly, this "safe mode" is still new to me, but thanks Metla for opening my eyes to the real problem. Obviously it's all that tinfoil I've been eating... . |

| 188874 | 2003-11-03 18:55:00 | 2. Do you mean OE or IE? For IE go to Tools-Internet Options-Connections and check the "Never dial a connectin" 'radio' button. 3. Try applying the Microsoft Windows 98SE shutdown patch from here (www.microsoft.com) If that fails try to determine if there is a program running that itself hangs when shutting down windows thus preventing windows from closing properly. Use msconfig to selectively disable programs that run at start up, you may find one that has problems or dodgy vxd drivers etc. |
