2003-11-05 20:51:00 | I have a customised Hosts file which blocks access to a few hundred known ad-servers. Unfortunately after my new system upgrade, now whenever I go to a site that links to one of these blocked ad-servers, I got a pop-up alert which says "the connection was refused when connecting to xyz.com" This of course is almost as bad as getting the ads in the first place. It only happens while using Netscape (7.1). Any idea how to disable this notification? Win XP Pro. Thx

2003-11-05 20:59:00 | sorry as far as i know you can't. its one of the reasons i don't use netscape. i can't remember if mozilla does the same thing or not. otherwise try opera (http://www.opera.com/).

2003-11-05 21:21:00 | Greg In Netscape do you have a tick next to 'Block unrequested popup window' under Edit, Preferences, Privacy and Security, the Popup Windows section, Popup Windows? Oxie (Lyn)

2003-11-05 21:27:00 | Yep. But this is not a pop-up browser window - it's an alert message - probably java. I just used the term pop-up because that's what it does | Greg S (201) | |
2003-11-06 09:49:00 | the alert message is part of netscape. when you block an add, in IE you see the box the ad normally would be in with an error message in it. with netscape you get a pop up box with an error message in it which you have to click close. as you can imagen its a major pain in the @#$%. there muct be a few netscape users here with the same problem?? anyone ??

2003-11-06 10:29:00 | Ok , you got it perfectly, Tweakie. In IE I see exactly what you describe. But - what about the fact that I didn't have this issue when using Netscape 4.x ? Thx for your input mate

2003-11-06 18:32:00 | I have Netscape 7.1 and I do not get any popup type windows. When they are blocked I get a little tiny icon which sits in Netscape's bar at the bottom right. If I want to unblock the popup window I click on the icon and enter the URL into an "Allowed" box. I sure don't get a pop-up alert which says "the connection was refused when connecting to ..." | 189484 | 2003-11-06 20:29:00 | hi oxie, you may be able to help Greg S with this. do you use any site blocking or popup blocking outside of netscape (i'm assumeing netscape has its own built in popup blocker) ?? | tweak'e (174) | |
2003-11-06 20:44:00 | Tweake Yes, Netscape has its own popup blocker (if you choose to activate it, and I have), No, I do not have any other site blocking apps. Perhaps the pop-ups that Greg is getting is from the customised hosts file which blocks assess that he mentions, and nothing to do with Netscape. Oxie

2003-11-06 20:49:00 | oxie, can you try something for me?? go to a page that dosn't exist and see if you get a popup meeage which will properly say something like cant connect to server. or entre 127.0.0.1 in the browser and see if you get the popup. the popups aren't generated by the host file, its a bit hard for a text file to excute commands ;-) i don't have mozilla installed at the mo so i can't do any testing.
