189337 2003-11-05 06:56:00 Hi y'all, im thinking very seriously about getting the Compaq Presario 2169 notebook, but was wondering if anyone else has one and could tell me whether its worth the 2,700 ill be forking out for it?

It has 512mb ram, 64mb radeon graphics, 1.87ghz processor (although i have to confess that threw me, since its called an Athlon 2500+ - i was expecting a 2.5 ghz processor, haha!) Also has 802.11b, dvd-rom/cd-writer etc.

Anyways, if you have it you know the hardware it contains - what i really want to know is if it can fit a P4 processor (above 2.0 ghz), and do you know if that can be done through Noel Leemings at an extra cost (as this is where ill prolly be buying it). If not, is the Athlon 2500+ a decent processor - it just seems alittle slow sounding in this day and age of processors.

Do Presarios have a good rep in the laptop world? Anything else i should know about this laptop?

For the price, it seems to have alot of good quailities (dvd-rom, wireless, cd-writer, good graphics, good ram, etc).

Thanks in advance guys - hope you can help.

189338 2003-11-05 07:42:00 I understand the Presario is the cheap/home end of the Compaq/HP stable.
I have just purchased an HP NX 9005 for about the same price. It is nowhere near as well spec'd but is a business quality machine and I'm hoping it will be robust and quick for a long time.
Don't know about the P4 processor but it seems as tho manufacturers just put in the best value chip from month to month.
Nothing wrong with the Athlon from what I have read - should be fast.

There are arcane specs involving L1, L2, and L3 cache not to mention the onboard ram speed, which impact on the speed of any machine. You will find masses of profound advice on this wonderful forum.

Good Luck

189339 2003-11-06 08:34:00 Hate to upset you when you're set on your purchase. I was told by the tech in a laptop specialty store to steer clear of Presario laptops. They look good and the specs sound good but .....components are not quite A1 and they're buggers to put right if anything goes wrong. Shortstop (632)
