189794 2003-11-06 19:23:00 Hoping someone might be able to help.

Been trying to install Dynalink pcmcia modem 56k on digital hinote laptop, running Windows 98 se. System hangs when "looking for apprpriate drivers". Windows detected the modem card and the type (Lucent Win Modem), just couldn't manage to get them. I have the drivers on the CD that came with the modem. (second hand)

Posted the problem at the Dynalink site, but haven't heard in a week.

Grateful for any suggestions.

189795 2003-11-07 00:23:00 Have you tried installing the driver with the card not plugged in? That might work .

All this hot-pluggable stuff gets very dependent of phase of the moon, day of the week, and whether you have your fingers crossed .

189796 2003-11-07 01:25:00 When your in the Add New Hardware wizard, click Next when Search for best drivers........"recommended" then check the box with, Specify a location and browse to your software CD and look for a win 98 folder or drivers win98 and possibly .inf if it doesn't allow you to click OK prior to that, Next then Finsh. Go through the same process for the wave device if its a voice modem.

189797 2003-11-07 06:23:00 Hi Graham
Yes, I loaded the drivers without the card being in, but still hangs accessing them.

Also checked the moon, day of the week and had my fingers crossed until they ached- but still no luck.

Thanks for your reply. :-)

189798 2003-11-07 06:31:00 Hi Murray

I'm pretty sure I loaded the drivers ok, without the card plugged in. Immediately the card is plugged in, it goes looking for drivers or installing them and there's the timer for a long while, then computer stops, restarts, but hangs while the big Windows logo is still on the screen.

I'm off to have another go loading the drivers using your suggestion. Will let you know.

Thanks
Anne

189799 2003-11-08 20:45:00 Have installed drivers from CD as Murray suggested, but not able to as Play and Play hardware .
As soon as I insert modem card, Windows box appears "looking for drivers" and then goes into trance . No other box appears saying "can't find . . . " or insert . Just hangs there .

Could this be to do with pcmcia driver or com port driver or is it just the fickle nature of modem cards? Have no previous experience of them, but fast clocking up the hours .

Thanks for any advice anyone might have .

189800 2003-11-09 00:59:00 My hardware is totally different, but . . . ;-)

My Winbook laptop came with Windows ME, and I have a couple of 3com Ethernet cards . They both installed OK (one at a time :D) and work . I also use in it an adapter card for Compact Flash card .

You should have in the My Computer/System/Hardware page a PC Card/PCMCIA (whatever they might call it) section, which is for the interface itself, not any cards which might be plugged in . It has a window which displays any cards which are plugged in . If that page doesn't exist, that will be the problem . Maybe it's not the driver for your modem that Windows can't find, it's the driver for the interface .

189801 2003-11-09 09:04:00 It's not that either . I have the window display showing for 2 pcmcia cards plugged in so they must be enabled . I don't get to look at these once I plug my modem and see how they figure, as the system immediately hangs .

Why would the system hang just after I insert the card? Why don't I get another error message instead . Is there a usual reason for this computer behaviour? The system hangs because . . . ?
I wish I knew more . :-(

189802 2003-11-09 10:03:00 Sounds like a conflict or as GL says something is up with the interface. Any yellow ? or ! beside any of the entries? You may also have a corrupted system file. You could try reloading the drivers for the pcmcia interfaces or uninstall and reinstall from controll panel, system devices, to refresh, have your Win CD handy. if that pans out ok, retry the modem. Pcmcia is enabled in your BIOS, what other devices are on-board or attached that might be causing a conflict.
