189746 2003-11-06 09:56:00 Hey all,

Few Questions:

1) If I had my own domain name, and POP3 email like me@mydomain.com. All hosted at home on my own computer. However, decide to go offline for a day or two. If other people email me, will I still get the email when I come back online.

2) Can I get a free software with features like cPanel, that will allow me to control everything.

3) If I have my own proper www.mydomain.com what do I point it to. Do I point it to the http: that I set up?

4) Using the control panel, will I be able to add infinite numbers of subdomains, POP3 emails, etc.?

The server machine will be running Windows 98SE

Many thanks,

13 days till end of examinations! YES!

Not too sure if they is any "free" software to do that, also cPanel does not work under win

Should do AFAIK!

Yup, unless you have a static IP address, but JetStream and JetStream starter doesnt by default (Its extra if you do) so yeah.. point it to your no-ip domain!

This is ISP/Host dependant AFAIK.

Might I suggest looking into Redhat perhaps if you're going to be hosting web or ftp?

189749 2003-11-06 11:32:00 If you're wanting to host it yourself, running your own mail/web/ftp/dns/etc servers, you'll need them up all the time.... I'm picking this isn't what you're wanting though. -=JM=- (16)
189750 2003-11-06 11:38:00 when I last had a domain I had Ihug do all the work :-)

my web page that was homepages.ihug.co.nz\~username became www.mydomain.co.nz

all email sent to user@mydomain.co.nz got passed on the username@ihug.co.nz

I payed about $100 setup feew and $10 per month and they did everthing, I could upload new web content with FTP in the normal way of IHUG.

189751 2003-11-07 01:56:00 $52+gst /year at KiwiWebHosting (kiwiwebhost.co.nz), plus $39.95 to register your domain. You can redirect all your mail through their (NZ based) servers and you get Cpanel X to do your subdomains, parked domains, mail, ftp'ing, etc.

If you have not figured.. that's where I got all the ideas ;-)... So, in order to save myself some money, and learn something at the same time. I'm wanting to get the exact service I'd get with them, but without the cost.

189753 2003-11-07 03:37:00 No, its not. It will only be online when I want it to... i.e. not 24/7.

That's why Ive asked: Can I retrieve the emails after i come back online

Yes, this is quite a good idea actually. I have my own Orcon free hosting and email. But my main needs for the domain are that:
*As many POP3 as possible
* As many subdomains as possible i.e. http://www.subdomain.domain.com

For the hosting... I perfer would FTP access

As for what you said... can I go down to Orcon, sign up for something for $36, then just tell it to forward all emails and domain to my preferred destination. Do I need to add any more money to get a email@mydomain.com and/or forwarding?

But still.. I perfer to host myself.. still learning ;-)

Cheers all,

189755 2003-11-07 03:53:00 The way we do it here at work is you have your main / original email with your ISP. i.e. name@isp.co.nz.

Then you set up a domain, i.e. @name.co.nz, and with that you then tell your domain host (domainz etc) to send any email that comes to your domain to your main / original email address. Usually no charge for this.

Then you need your own mail server like MS Exchange or FTGate etc where you set up all your own email addresses. i.e. mine@name.co.nz
You then tell the mail server to collect email from your main / original isp mailbox, which in turn then puts the email in the correct mailboxes for you to collect. You then set up all your local PC's to get their email from the PC running the mail server program.

You can set the mail server program to connect and download & send email at certain times and you don't have to be online all the time and you won't lose any emails because they just sit in your original ISP email mailbox until they get downloaded.
