189610 2003-11-06 04:32:00 ok so, winXP thinks that i only have 300~ megs free on an 8 gig partition. i've had a bit of a nosy round but i can't find where all this space has gone! does anyone know of a program which can show a normal directory structure (like windows explorer) but also shows how much total data is in each folder? so i can narrow down where all the space is?

turning on details doesn't show space taken by folders btw

189611 2003-11-06 06:00:00 Sounds like you might have a lot of junk buildup. Try a utility like System Mechanic and use the Clean Up Junk Files option, or even just use Windows' own version - Select C:/Properties/General and see what happens.

By default XP and Win2K will both save a dump file (user.dmp) whenever your system crashes, this file will be as big as the amount of RAM you were using at the time. Those things can easily consume space!! Search for *.dmp to get rid of those.

If you have got them, reset the size of your .dmp files by clicking on My Computer/Properties/Advanced/Startup & Recovery - where it says Write debugging information, select Small Dump File (64Kb), and tell it to overwrite any existing file. That way you'll only ever have 1 x 64kb .dmp file.

Hope this helps!

189612 2003-11-06 07:39:00 chances are a lot of your space is being used up by system restore.

to see how much drive space is allocated to this feature check under system properties, system restore, settings.

to remove restore points type "cleanmgr" in the start menu's "run" box, and then choose "more options" once you have seleted a drive to clean.

do you store your documents and mail on this partition? if so you could move them..
