189977	2003-11-10 03:53:00	AFAIK you can't buy an OS at Academic pricing, only Office etc. But as stated earlier, you can buy a just a HDD and then buy an OEM version of an OS at the same time and get it much cheaper than buying a full version. No need to buy a whole new PC!	CYaBro (73)

189982	2003-11-10 04:23:00	Well this turned out to be a really good post, I've lerant quite a bit from the various replies. I'm going for XP Home but I would prefer ther Pro version. The post on "MS OEM Hardware Requirements" was really fascinating, my earlier post saying all I need to buy is an IDE cable was in fact closer to the truth than was first stated. This definitely give me a bit of hope. Still haven't tried Chill's Knoppix distro "YET"..... chief's hand quivers as the linux age dawns upon him But will give it a go today some time cheers chiefnz	chiefnz (545)

189984	2003-11-10 06:09:00	Yeah ntddevsys that's exactly what Iwould like to do, another thing I wouldl iketo do is have a file server set up, but I have no idea how to do this. It wold be hard to implemet around here, as the tastes of each user vary, gaming freak, music freak, video freak and a normal PC user I suppose. Would the network setup benefit from running like a terminal server client or should I just stickto everyone having their own customizable system? cheers cheifnz	chiefnz (545)
189985	2003-11-10 08:46:00	A Dedicated Sever is quite difficult to set up. Most Systems i've setup, just have a Powerfull Windows XP Professonial Computer thats always on and not used for Intensive Tasks, only CAD and Video Manipulation .. etc with a Seperate Hard Drive (NFTS), sharing over the Network. Cheap File Sever :D The Ability to edit Group Policy is really handy with Professonial, and the ability to put User Restrictions on Software and being able to Protect folders not in the My Documents Section is handy to. Mostly i don't like Home's restrictions on one or two things you might want to do ... best to keep the options open. I also don't like it saying Windows XP Home when i start up the Computer.	ntddevsys (987)
