189967 2003-11-08 06:35:00 Dam this is gonna be expensive, but necessary I guess. ?Looks like it's gonna be between $1300 (XP Pro) and $800 (XP Home) fo r 5 PC's, or alternatively $0.00 if I can convince the entire house to go Linux....

lol..... somehow I doubt that will happen.

Or maybe I can install 1 copy of each OS I do have..... Win 95, Win98, Win2K Pro and XP Pro, then I'd only have to buy 1 extra OS, now... all I have to do is figure out who I'm gonna give Win 95 to.....

Man this is a headache :( HELP

189968 2003-11-08 07:12:00 Might have missed something, but why do you want to replace the OS on all 5 computers? Why not stick to the OS you already have - there are lots of things far more enjoyable to spend your money on than a new OS! Baldy (26)
189969 2003-11-08 07:38:00 Coz its not a legit OS...!?! Chilling_Silently (228)
189970 2003-11-08 11:51:00 I need to change them or at least get separate OS's for each station cos I've installed the same OS on each PC, they do not have individual licenses. As far as I know it's not legal, also from a support point of view it's a good move as Win2K will soon be in it's final years for support by MS, I think it has another year or 2 to go, I'm not quite sure, plus with the technologies coming up, XP is going to be a good choice... at least until Longhorn or anther alternative (maybe Linux) starts addressing newer technologies. chiefnz (545)
189971 2003-11-09 03:40:00 Hey Chill can you tell me what the file in your 2nd link is, they're both ISO's I see, but 2nd one's like 65bytes????

do I need to burn that to a spearate disc or do I only need the 1st ISO for Knoppix?

cheers

What do you mean? Linux is overtaking MS in the technology stakes. Longhorn is a myth/marketing hype...........................................;)

189973 2003-11-09 05:19:00 More like a GUI take-off of Apple's 'Aqua' interface...

Similar name, too... 'Aero'.

I still don't know particularly what is so fascinating and "must-have" about an interface where you can have hardware accelerated window effects, drag windows around the screen and they look like they're flying, etc.

Metallic shiny looks with a bit of transparency is good enough for me.

The first file is the image of Knoppix - this get's burnt to disk. The second one (ending in .iso.md5) is the MD5 checksum of the file to ensure it downloaded correctly. You open this with notepad and read the MD5 sum, then you run the first file through an MD5 summer and make sure that the checksums are the same - if not, you have a problem...

189975 2003-11-09 22:24:00 $1300 (XP Pro) and $800 (XP Home) fo r 5 PC's

um just buy a cheap hdd and you can get a OEM version of XP (home) for about $200, this is the cheapest way, and you get some extra hdd space :)
