189912 2003-11-07 04:05:00 how do i tell if i have USB 1 or 2? i am getting an external CD-RW and want to get top speed. i cant get an internal as i have a USF case with no cooling fan (dont ask me how it doesnt explode) Megaman (344)
189913 2003-11-07 04:13:00 My first thoughts would be motherboard/computer handbook. Or trying downloading and running AIDA32 from here (www.webattack.com) Pheonix (280)
189914 2003-11-07 04:14:00 Check your spec's in the manual or find it on the net if you don't have it. You have to be carefull with USB 1 & 2. Some devices that claim to be 2 only run at USB 1 speeds. Its something to do with the loose definitions in the standards. So it would pay to check the spec's for any device and the connection on the PC to make sure its compatable with the full on USB 2 spec.

189915 2003-11-07 04:34:00 You'll find that most USB2 devices will run on quite happily on USB 1.1, the data transfer rates are slower though. I had the same problem trying to figure out if my USB ports were 2 or 1, aida didn't tell me, I would take the advice of earlier posts and check your motherboard hand book. USB2 is a fairly new standard so if your pc is older than 18 mths, I would say you haven't got USB2, but I maybe wrong. Lastly if you don't have onboard USB2, DSE (Dick Smith) has USB2 cards.
BTW my external cd burner USB2 runs perfectly well on my USB1.1 ports using 98se

189917 2003-11-10 02:46:00 Have a look in the Device Manager under Universal Serial Bus Controllers.
There will be an entry saying USB2 somewhere if you have it

i.e USB 2.0 Root Hub

Not always - mine doesn't :)

189919 2003-11-10 03:39:00 It doesn't necessarily have to be "USB 2.0 Root hub"

But if you have a look carefuly through all the devices listed under Universal Serial Bus there will be something like USB2.0 Enhanced USB controller...

189920 2003-11-10 23:48:00 Murray P makes a valid point re: loose USB definitions -- from memory (recalling an article I read recently..) there are now oficially 3 USB standards along the lines of normal (USB 1.1), bit faster and fastest!
Alot of manufacturers have previously taken 'advantage' of the formerly blurred/loose definitions and pasted USB 2 speed claims on devices that strictly speaking weren't true USB 2 speed.
So it's just something to watch out for.
By the way USB 2 devices are backwards compatable with USB 1 ports.
