Australia's Foreign Affairs and Trade Department is warning Australian tourists to New Zealand to monitor their personal safety and be aware the country is a seismic zone . Tourism New Zealand spokeswoman Cas Carter says the advice has been issued purely because New Zealand is the most popular Australian tourist spot . She says the earthquake advice was added simply because Australians are not used to them . Ms Carter believes it is not meant to put off visitors, but was done as a matter of consistency as Australia has advice on most other popular destinations . |

| 189839 | 2003-11-06 21:45:00 | The story on TV pointed out that our last fatality in an earthquake was like 1963 or something, while the last Australian fatalities were in the Newcastle quake of 1989. Plus each year many people die in Australia from snake bites, bush fires, etc etc. But never mind, just so long as those Aussies are well informed of the dangers of travelling outside their shores .... |
