| 189815 | 2003-11-06 21:03:00 | I need to work out the included angle of a rightangle triangle given the perpendicular and base measurements. Being pretty old I can do it as I did 50 years ago in school and get the right answer by using my old log tables. ie perpendicular divided by base eg perp 178mm divided by perp 259 = 0.687 and looking this up in the tan table = 34.5 degrees. As I have to do this frequently I am sure that Excel can do it but I can't find a simple formula to do it for me. It seems I need radians which I don't understand to get the answer I want. Incidentally the calculation is the angle of a stair case as we always know the horizontal and vertical measurement of the stair tread. So I want a formula that will give me the angle as I enter the two stair measurements. Any help would be appreciated John Robb |

| 189816 | 2003-11-06 22:29:00 | =ATAN(178/259)*180/PI() thats what you are after This is the inverse TAN, the answer is given in radians so you convert to an angel by x 180/PI Cheers |
