190293 2003-11-09 06:04:00 I'm looking to change the software I'm using in Windows, in order to try and dump Microsoft software (but not Windows quite yet) - specifically, a media player, email client, and chat client.

And so, I want some recommendations for good software to try. Here are my basic requirements:

Must support at least Windows 98 and XP
Email client: support GPG, whether it be natively or with a plugin (an external app such as GPGrelay is acceptable, but not as secure...)
Media player: movies, audio. No slow playing of videos (glares at Winamp).
Chat client: ICQ and MSN networks must be supported. Might as well chuck in IRC.

And I would like it if you could set a password for starting the email client, so my emails are protected from prying eyes on this multi-user system.

190295 2003-11-09 06:31:00 Hey

For the player I would go with RealOne Player (but only if you have over 256mb of ram, its a brick)
www.real.com

And for the E-mail I would go with Eudora 6.0 (haven't tired it but it sounds good)

190297 2003-11-09 07:07:00 Chat Client:
Gaim for Windows (gaim.sourceforge.net) - does AIM/ICQ, Yahoo, MSN, IRC, Jabber, Napster, Zepher and Gadu-Gadu (whatever the heck that one is!)

Email Client:
Thunderbird (texturizer.net) - has this to say about GPG
How do I use S/MIME, PGP or GnuPG to send and receive signed or encrypted messages?
To use S/MIME, open Mail/News and go to Edit | Mail & Newsgroup Account Settings | account name | Security. You can set which certificates to use with each account for digital signing and/or encryption.
Hooks to PGP or GnuPG are not included in Thunderbird, but are under development at Enigmail (http://enigmail.mozdev.org/)
Password protect the message pane (IMAP only) - With this trick, Mozilla Thunderbird will password protect the message list pane (aka the thread pane) by keeping it blank until you log in and enter a password for that account. (texturizer.net)

Browser:
Mozilla Firebird (www.mozilla.org) - A Lean, Mean Browsing Machine :D

190298 2003-11-09 07:24:00 Yes, I forgot to say I'm looking for another browser, too.

I might downgrade to MSIE 5.5 as well, for compatibility, but isn't it less bloated than IE6?

190300 2003-11-09 07:34:00 Isn't IE 6 "incorperated" into XP? At least thats what MS would have us believe. Try a new front end such as Avant. mark.p (383)
