190200 2003-11-08 22:02:00 Hi, I have a IBM 300GL Model 628248A. I have bought a new harddrive for it as the original one failed. When I used Fdisk and Format it came out as 8056MB instead of about 20GB (or 20000MB). I think I may need to upgrade the BIOS which is dated 3/28/97. Is this correct and do I download a new BIOS on to floppy from the IBM site? Then what do I do next?
Thanks,
asdex

190201 2003-11-08 22:12:00 does the bios id the correct size for the harddrive?

did you use the large drive optoin in fdisk? (sorry wording might not be quite correct has its been years since i've used fdisk).

190203 2003-11-09 01:06:00 May need a bios upgrade, check the manufacturers website. PoWa (203)
190204 2003-11-09 01:09:00 You may well need to update the bios if it is flashable and you can get hold of the correct bios binary file for you machine.

The article at this site (www.spcug.org) describes hard drive size limits very well.

It would be better for you to research flashing the bios using Google and visiting the IBM site to see if there are bios downloads for your machine.
It has to be done exactly to instructions and from a floppy, else the machine will be unbootable.

190205 2003-11-09 01:39:00 if you can't upgrade the bios check out the harddrive manafactures website and get the overlay software wich is another way of getting around this problem. tweak'e (174)
190206 2003-11-09 01:59:00 I'd look for that first. Reloading a BIOS is one of the many things which are best avoided unless essential.

Accidents happen. ;-)

190207 2003-11-09 04:02:00 Hi all, thanks for your advise so far on my problem. I have downloaded the updated BIOS and installed it ok. The new date is 2001 now but still the same problem. The BIOS reports about 8GB and when I deleted the original partition and ran FDisk again with the new BIOS I still got 8GB. The Harddrive is a Seagate 5400rpm U series.
Any other ideas? Will have to run a driver all the time? I have heard it can affect preformance
