190164 2003-11-08 12:27:00 Hi, I'm new here

I went through my C drive(the root, of course) and went through some folders and subfolders. I went to system32 for example and found a number of folders with funny names, with nothing in it.
I was wondering why those folders are there, how were they created, and why don't they have anything in them?
I deleted them, eventhough they (obviously) didn't take up any space, but there's no point in having them there either, only brings confusion.

Cheers,

190165 2003-11-08 12:43:00 Hi there, Welcome to PressF1.

...Not everybody makes their first post here at 1:30 in the morning ;-)

Anyway, Im going to say a few things:

Firstly, if you ever decide to do something like that again, make sure you leave them in the recycle bin for at least a day or two, rebooting a couple of times. They could have been something important seeing as they were in the System32 Folder.

Next, if you can remember any of these numbers/digits etc. it may have paid to throw them into Google and see what you can come up with.

I hope this helps you

Cheers

Chill.

190168 2003-11-08 23:16:00 Hi,
I think Iv'e heard of that program before, but I don't know exactly what it is. Is it a virus checker? can I download it for free? or just a trial?

Thanks,

190169 2003-11-08 23:29:00 I don't know about NTFS but a directory even though empty does take up some room in fat mikebartnz (21)

The other thing to watch is that the folders did in fact not contain any hidden files - unhide all files first before deleting folders.

Download it free from there. You may want to run Update and Immunize then the Scan for Spyware :-)

190173 2003-11-09 10:54:00 These numbered folders are Windows system generated folders, and have some role in error reporting as I undertand it.

You will usually find a Dr Watson dll in 1033 as an example.

Given that they are usually empty, I can't fathom why you would want to remove them, as you would gain almost no space back while risking system stability under error conditions.
