190016 2003-11-07 22:41:00 Hi all :)

I have just had my new LCD monitor delivered (Philips 170B4) which has a DVI-D connector, but my graphic card (Leadtek GeForce4 Ti4200) has a DVI-I connector. The monitor only came with the standard VGA cable.

Understandably I would like to use the DVI connections. Having a browse of DSE shows no DVI-I to DVI-D cables, but when I phoned them they said just to use a DVI-I to DVI-I cable.

This is the cable here (www.dse.co.nz). It says that "DVI-I plug connector can only be inserted in the DVI-I interface" so would this work on my DVI-D monitor connector? I think the DVI-I cable has too many pins for the DVI-D connection ?:|

Your comments would be appreciated.

Thanks
Jen :)

190017 2003-11-08 01:15:00 DVI-D plugs can be plugged into either type of socket. DVI-I plugs fit only DVI-I sockets.

"DVI-I DVI-D pinout" to Google will find you the grubby details. :D

190018 2003-11-08 01:29:00 As far as I'm aware, you should be able to use the DVI-I cable... or just a DVI-D cable.

A DVI-I cable should have 24 pins plus the crosshair 5-pin analogue setup? I wonder if it might actually work better to use a DVI-D cable.

That said, I'm not sure if I've actually seen a DVD-D connector, so it might actually be physically impossible to do.

Just for Mike :D
DVI-D (www.pacificcable.com) and DVI-I (www.pacificcable.com) connectors.

Graham: so it seems that the guy at DSE was wrong, and I can't use a DVI-I TO DVI-I connector then which is what I suspected.

However, as the monitor is a well known brand, the the Graphic card is common as well, there must be suitable cables somewhere to be found. Might have to email Philips support.

190020 2003-11-08 01:59:00 The guy at Dick Smith is correct.
You should use a DVI-I to DVI-I cable.
The cables are available from either Philips or Ascent.
I also bought a 170B4 monitor a few months ago and spent much time (and a couple of wrong cables purchased) learning about DVI

190021 2003-11-08 02:03:00 Thanks Capt Jimbo :)

I was hoping to get your attention as a forum search found your previous post with the same question but no final answer with what you used.

I will try that DSE cable then.

Cheers
Jen

190022 2003-11-08 02:09:00 Nope sorry
Take no notice of me
(I am a fool)
The correct cable should be DVI-D to DVI-D
The following page should explain
www.pacificcable.com

190023 2003-11-08 02:46:00 Is there a DVD-D socket on the back of the display? If it has 19 holes (socket, see ;-)) it will accept the DVD-I cable. The extra holes (unneeded for DVI-D) will be there to "avoid damage" to the extra pins on the DVI-I plug, and won't have contacts inside. That would be fine. But if the holes aren't there, you will need the proper DVI-D cable. Or a big hammer. Graham L (2)

Yes, the plug on the back of the monitor has holes in it which makes it a socket. :D But it has 24 in a 8x3 arrangement and then 3 extra slots at a 12, 3 and 6 o'clock position. Exactly like in the link I gave above for Mike.

The cable has pins in it - this I understand :D, so the DVI-I cable has less pins than I have holes? Or have I lost it completely now ?:|

Like heck :O - I'm totally in love with my new monitor already and that is with just using the VGA connection.
