190226 2003-11-09 00:46:00 Hi there!

I've just installed a Conexant Soft K56 Data Fax modem on a friends computer...the only thing that bugs me about it is that I can't turn of the speaker volume.

I have gone to Control Panel -> Phone and Modems -> and adjusted the slide bar of the Speaker Volume to the "Off" position...I have also gone into the settings for the the Internet Connection and unchecked the "Enable modem speaker"...but I still get the annoying buzzing and whistling.

I can silence the modem by putting a plug into the speaker input of the modem...but to me that seems like a crude solution...any ideas? The operating system on my friend's computer is "Windows XP (Home)".

Thanks for any help!

TIA,
Brian

190228 2003-11-09 01:57:00 I've had the same problem too. Luckily a kind PressF1 user alerted me to a way to solve it.

Instead of using the conexant driver, use the "Fujitsu LB RWModem V.90 56K E" driver which is under the "Generic" list from memory. If you experience system instabilty, remove it ASAP.

If all else fails, buy a 3.5mm Stereo Phono plug from Dick Smith Electronics or similar place, and plug it into the "Spk" outlet on the back of the modem. That will stop any sound from coming out at all (including the dialing sound).

190229 2003-11-09 02:01:00 a small warning with useing the "Fujitsu LB RWModem V.90 56K E" driver, several people here has mentioned it does play up and in some cases will crash. if at all possible use the correct driver. tweak'e (174)
190230 2003-11-09 05:24:00 Hi Brian

Try this as well:

Network connections > Dial-up > right click properties
General > Configure

Uncheck "Enable Modem Speaker"

Think you'll find this'll work - if not try your friend's ISP
