1350158 2013-07-29 10:22:00 So for the past week or so my internet connection has become extremely unstable .
Sometimes I get a disconnect every few hours, other times it keeps dropping every few minutes .

I'm on a Linksys WAG120N . Upgraded firmware, factory resets . Lowered MTU . Everything I could .

This is what my log looks like .

Mon, 2013-07-29 11:00:24 - LCP down .

Mon, 2013-07-29 11:00:28 - Terminating on signal 15 .

Mon, 2013-07-29 11:00:28 - LCP down .

Mon, 2013-07-29 11:00:30 - Connection terminated .

Mon, 2013-07-29 11:00:30 - Connect time 11 . 4 minutes .

--- DSL Information ---
DSL Driver Version: 3 . 4 . 4 . 10 . 0 . 1
DSL VPI/VCI: 0/100
DSL Status: Up
DSL Mode: ADSL2+
DSL Channel: 0

Down up
DSL Noise Margin: 123 dB 122 dB
DSL Attenuation: 10 dB 69 dB

Do these numbers look good?

I don't think it is the filters, because I removed phone/sky having only the router connected to the phone line .

1350159 2013-07-29 11:35:00 Those modems are expensive junk unfortunately. Whether it's causing your issue in this case remains to be seen, but I wouldn't be surprised. Can you get hold of another modem to test with? wratterus (105)

Well the modem hasn't given me any issues over the past 4 years now. Although it gets extremely hot.

I might have a crappy telecom provided Thompson somewhere, had a look for it today couldn't find it. But that was so terrible I had connect it to a much older router to have stable Wi-Fi connection which forced me to buy this one.

What's a good router these days?

1350161 2013-07-29 11:52:00 If you've got 4 years out of it, you've done very well.

The Asus DSL-N12U is pretty decent for an All In One that won't break the bank.

1350162 2013-07-29 12:24:00 ^^ Pretty much sums it up. I'm amazed it lasted you 4 years.

The DrayTek DV2760 is good if you're looking to future-proof with VDSL2, or the DV2710Ne if you're after something that's cheaper and JUST for ADSL2+

The DSL-N12U isn't *too* bad, but I've found a few things with it lately that really bug me.

1350163 2013-07-29 13:10:00 Hum. I don't need VDSL.

I'd like to spend no more than $150 - would the N12U be the best on this list for given price?

We have a lot of devices: TV, PS3, 2 phones, iPad, 3 laptops and a desktop. And probably another TV soon.

1350164 2013-07-29 21:17:00 Wouldn't it be a good idea to ring your ISP before jumping to the conclusion that a new modem will fix things? linw (53)
1350165 2013-07-29 21:21:00 It depends what features are important to you. The DSL-N series are very solid imo, and if the DrayTek is out of budget, that's what I'd go for. inphinity (7274)
1350166 2013-07-29 21:42:00 Yep for under $150 (well under $150 actually) it's what I would go for too. wratterus (105)
1350167 2013-07-29 21:44:00 Those signal to noise figures seem totally bogus, 123 DB ?? I don't think that's even possible, is there a decimal point missing? (every 3 DB = half the power. a 12 DB margin is a signal 16 times stronger than the background noise). Did this happen before or after the firmware update?

+1 for talking to your ISP first, if nothing else they can eliminate any obvious line fault
