Napier resident Julia Probert, who is visiting the region, says she is impressed with the gentle nature of the people involved in the burial and says it has been treated with respect.

“The graders are so gentle moving the whale. It gives you tingles.

“I think they have shown great respect in moving and burying the whale.”There is nothing wrong with respecting a large mammal that has died. Why turn it into negative thing?

Jen, I am not the slightest bit excited about a half decomposed Whale floating ashore, any more than I am about finding a cow legs up with bloat.

The humour I find is the Maori claiming ownership, and being given it, whilst we pay the bill for the burial.

It’s the same beach where oil from the Rena came ashore, and although the seabed and foreshore now belong to Maori, we are still paying the bill for the cleanup.

I always thought ownership came with associated responsibilities.

Well it does, unless Maori are involved and then the rules change.

As far as my Post is concerned, the Press item was quoted in its entirety including the piece you have selected to point out. What I said was some of the comments were a laugh.

It’s up to the readers to make up their own mind as to merit, and frankly I don’t see too many offering support to the handling of the matter.

Where did it say who was being billed? The article said "Department of Conservation officials and local iwi are using two diggers to bury the whale". Sounds like shared resources, labour and machines etc. Jen (38)
1326855 2013-02-07 08:05:00 Silly Maori's

Anyway, It was nice to see John Key have a go at them last night on the news. It's about the first thing he's done right.
