| 1350399 | 2013-08-01 23:31:00 | My Dad is on dial up because he didn't get enough use from his broadband connection to justify the cost. He still wants to do a bit of web surfing now and then, however, so we are looking at getting one of those 2Degrees mobile broadband USB stick modems. The 1GB $20 monthly plan *should* suit him fine as my sister claims that she never goes near the 500MB limit on her iPhone even with fairly "heavy" use. But isn't this because her phone is mainly accessing the mobile-friendly sites which don't hog as much bandwidth as "normal" sites? When I first had broadband 3GB was plenty for our family as long as we didn't spend much time on You Tube but I am concerned that web pages are now far more bandwidth hogs than they used to be. My question is do iPads and tablets use less bandwidth like mobile phones or are they the same as desktop PCs which access full website pages? My Dad is not interested in You Tube, Skype, downloading movies, TV On Demand, etc but wants to use Trade Me and maybe browse news sites and that sort of thing. We would have to somehow stop videos automatically playing like they do on some sites. |

My Dad is the same and was ripping through those 1GB $20 packs like you wouldn't believe on his iPad. |

| 1350403 | 2013-08-02 00:49:00 | Presumably you're got a home line anyway? So the extra $25 - $30/month to go to ADSL with 30GB cap surely makes more sense than $20/month for 1GB on a 3G data stick? | inphinity (7274) | ||

Low Broadband User Flip is a great deal if you are a low user. For $49.95 you get a phone line and 5Gb of Data! That looks good. Dad is in Tauranga and may be moving from his current residence within the next three months so doesn't want any connection/reconnection fees. Looks like Flip has none so could work out. Thanks for that. |

As I said previously, my sister uses far less than 500MB on her mobile phone each month and thought that Dad would find 1GB plenty. Dad also has a local calling plan for his phone which means that his phone bill would go up as well with broadband on the line so it is not just a $10 per month increase. Being a pensioner we have to make sure he doesn't over-commit himself with the extra costs. |
