1350110 2013-07-29 10:26:00 I have a laptop HP Compaq 610 (2010 purchased brand new). I have changed to Win 7 64bit from Win 7 32 bit..
My settings shows my 4Gb RAM as DDr2 SDRAM. with 2 slots of 2Gb each.
I was wanting to go to 8Gb RAM.
On the phone to PB Technologies I was told not possible to upgrade by buying a newer RAM type because it would not fit the slots on my Compaq.

Does this sound correct? Is there a fix?

Guidance please

thanks

Neil

1350112 2013-07-29 10:35:00 They are correct --- you HAVE to use DDR2 SODIMM ram that will work in your laptop.

There are several different types, DDR DDR2, DDR3 they are not interchangeable as the alignment slots are different. ( that's only a start)

You cant go changing the RAM holders.

Being a compaq, not all DDR2 Laptop RAM will work in them, some compaqs can be fussy buggers, and require certain brands. Also you may find the laptop will have a maximum amount it can take.

Edited: Cato's link provides 4GB Max,so it's maxed out already. ---- Solution if you want more-- new Laptop.

A 32bit O/S will not see more than 4GB of RAM, in fact I bet it doesn't show the full 4GB even.

Why did you swap to 32? You should have left it at 64bit.

1350114 2013-07-29 21:15:00 As above, 4GB is the maximum supported for that laptop. Time for a new one! :) It's old anyway.

I think you misread that pctek, he changed to 64-bit from 32-bit. I read it backwards first time too, expected it to be "I changed from abc to xyz".

He changed from 32bit to 64bit.

1350116 2013-07-29 22:06:00 Windows these days reports the total amount of RAM correctly even if it can't use all of it, I think MS did that to prevent people thinking some was "missing".
So even under 32bit windows 7 the properties of my computer will report 4 or more GB of RAM, it just won't be able to use more than ~ 3.2-3.5GB and will show as much in task manager.

Looks like I'm stuck unless I win money to buy a new laptop

1350118 2013-07-30 07:16:00 What made you think 4GB was a problem? Be happy. 4GB is fine. linw (53)
