1350013 2013-07-26 23:47:00 Hello again.
Another query - how to stop little used printers ink from drying up.
It's a pain - cartridge world refill them and I get some good test prints, but next time I go to use the printer for anything ,(scanning, copying, printing), usually months later, it won't work because the ibid have run out.
Can you store them in the fridge or something?

1350014 2013-07-27 00:02:00 Probably cheaper to sell the printer and pay someone to print the pages for you. b.... (7683)
1350015 2013-07-27 00:08:00 I'd like to know this too. I have the same problem with cheap ink cartridges - work good when I install them but next time I try to use it one or more of the colours is no longer working.
I got frustrated and bought a cheap laser printer - problem solved except it's only black and white and can't print on CD's. Kinda wish I'd bought a colour laser.

My current solution for the inkjet I use to print CD's is to use a genuine Epsom black cartridge and only print in black and white text. A full set of genuine cartridges @ 6 x $22 approx is just not worth it.
The genuine ink does seem to last a lot better. Another option would be to leave the cartridges sealed up in the packaging and save up your printing until you have a reasonable amount - not practical for me.

Without the ink my brother multi won't do any of its functions.
So maybe ill have to rely on the library.

Thanks for getting back to me.

1350017 2013-07-27 12:29:00 Buy a color laser, they are a lot cheaper these days, Often cheaper than a set of genuine inkjet cartridges ( or even some single cartridges in some cases) and the toners wont dry out, worst they will do is settle, so you may need to take out the toner give it a shake and put it back. The color laser I have which is hardly used has toners that are over 4 years old and still working.

Heres a cheap one at price spy Example (pricespy.co.nz)

1350018 2013-07-27 13:02:00 Add to above, bloody timer ran out grrrrrr that is only a printer, not a MFC. If you only print they are dirt cheap, a MFC is more expensive, but in the long run still cheaper than inkjets. wainuitech (129)
1350019 2013-07-28 00:12:00 Isn't the price of toner cartridges the killer for laser printers?
Cheaper to throw the printer away, and buy a new one, when the initial toner runs out. Probably not an issue if printer is hardly ever used.

Depends on the printer - One that I have sold a few of has a Approximately 1,400 pages @ 5% coverage rated per toner. In reality you'll get more than that as its not often you would use 5% coverage of a single colour. The ones I'm referring to are just under $100 each. Some of the printers, the owners are still on the starter cartridges that come with the machine a year later.

May sound a lot, but take ink cartridges that dry out, or actually used a lot, they would cost more than Toners.

Mind you saying that my Lexmark MFC is in need of new toners soonish, they wont be replaced - I'll be getting a new printer, the Lexmark is a over 6 years old, the toners have a capacity of Approximately 3000 pages @ 5% coverage. I can tell you now :) they have done a lot more than that, but at around $300 each its a bit to expensive. The Lexmark has a scanner which only gets used once in a while, maybe 3-4 times a year, so it will be siting in the corner turned off and the New Laser, printing only will be used in its place.

1350021 2013-07-28 01:54:00 Yes, those toner prices make your mouth water. It's the old razor/razor blade strategy! That Konica Minolta is sooo cheap at $128 but a full set of toner cartridges is $470!!! Ouch.

It would be a no brainer to buy a new printer wouldn't it?

I had a colour laser given to me a couple of years ago but I just couldn't face the toner replacements so I, too, gave it away.

1350022 2013-07-28 02:23:00 New Inks can get expensive - One person I was dealing with a few weeks back, she had just purchased new Inks for her HP MFC, (around $120.00 she said) she got a day or two usage, then blew up a circuit board in the printer. The cost of repairs would have been more than a new printer, because of the age of the printer her cartridges wouldn't fit any new printers. wainuitech (129)
