191168 2003-11-12 05:35:00 I am trying to set up an (very) old computer. It has Award BIOS, and I am trying to get the CD-drive, the HDD and the FDD to work.

I've decided to start from scratch, having only the video card in place. I hook up the HDD to the primary IDE slot, jumper it to master and I get the wonderful message:

Hard disk(s) fail (80)

Heres the twist, if I hook the CD-drive and the HDD up to the same IDE cable and jumper them appropriatly, it works! BUT, the CD-drive is not accesable from DOS.

Any help will be welcomed...

Cheers,
Ben

There is no should not be. It is better to be on a seperate cable but they can co-exist on the same one. I have a PC set up with it exactly like that because it has 3 hard drives and one CDRom. The 3rd hard drive is slow due to the CDRom but they all work togeather nicely.

191172 2003-11-12 07:02:00 i know that some ATAPI Cdroms have problems if set to master mode. try slave. agent_24 (4330)

So little detail - "an (very) old computer" - to work with, so expect vague replies.
