| 191090 | 2003-11-12 00:37:00 | I have been looking around for a laptop. The thing that I am confused about is why do the laptops with new P4-M processors have much slower speeds at 1.3-1.7GHz, when there are laptops with old Celeron chips that reach 2.4Ghz!!! Are the processor speed comparable for the two- is 1.6GHz on a P4-M the same as 1.6GHz on a Celeron performace-wise? Since I'm asking, is there much difference between normal P4 and P4-M? I am a student and a gamer (not a good mix!), so I want something light to carry around but also something good enough for basic gaming. Any recommendations will be appreciated. Thanks. |

The P4-M is the mobile (laptop) processor which runs a lot cooler than plain vanillla P4 processors and are therefore more desirable. They are also more expensive which is why you see lappies with faster, but hotter processors for similar prices. |

The P4-M does not use as much power so your Battery life will be longer and with laptops battery life is a big part in things. They use less power so they don't run as hot. | BootyLicious (526) | ||

Pentium 4 - Standard desktop processor, so it will run hot, short batter life. Cheaper. Pentium 4-M - Mobile version, less heat. More expensive. Celeron - Clock for clock the performance is worse than a P4. IIRC a 2.4Ghz Celeron is about the same speed as 2.0GHz P4. Pentium M (aka Centrino) - Designed from the ground up for laptops. Much lower clock rate than pentium/celeron to reduce power requirements, but the performance is very good. A 1.6GHz PentiumM is about the same as a 2.2 - 2.4GHz P4. |

Centrino is more of a certification for laptops meaning that the laptop is running the new Intel Pentium M CPU, Intel 855 chipset and has Intel wireless 2100 network card.
