191510 2003-11-13 04:55:00 Just installed Mandrake 9.2, and having a few problems.

First, all the fonts on mozzila and konqueror are all screw, and a tad hard to read.

Second, pcworld mag said they had 70 mb free memory on KDE with 128mb ram.
Why do I only have 5mb free with 128mb ram?

I thought I did a minimal install, but this is some more info.
Tasks: 68 total, 2 running, 65 sleeping, 0 stopped, 1 zombie

I wouldnt have a clue what this means, but it looks like I have a lot of stuff running?
I dunno. I have one terminal open, mozilla, and kppp to connext to dialup.

Third - Terminals. So far, I have used them for 'free' and 'top'. I have a japanese rxvt, a chinese rxvt, and a few other language termanals that all desplay in english. What is the point in all these terminals? Can I just have one? What would that one be?

I will come back later with some more.

Thanks

pcworld will be running 9.1

68 total = 68 services running, 2 apps runing in x or kde.

Zombie????

the open apps will be terminal and mozilla, as the kppp will be a service.

191512 2003-11-13 05:12:00 Nuts! I want 9.1 now.

What the heck happened in 9,2 to make it take up 70mb more?

And I waited for 9.2 to come out, before I bout linux, dumb.

Oh, and all my m's look like r n

191513 2003-11-13 05:18:00 may not just be 9.2 could be 9.1 as well, but

pcworld might not as had as many processes running as u.

What have you instaled?

eg. servers and what kind?

191514 2003-11-13 05:18:00 Wouldn't worry about memory, Linux utilises as much as it can-I doesn't leave it resting idly like another popular OS-mrtg-pme.sourceforge.net mark.p (383)

Try changing the fonts in the mozilla preferences.

How many applications do you have open? This measurements would have been taken on a fresh boot and with no other applications open. Also, as far as I'm aware, memory under linux is not freed until something needs it.

That sounds correct. Mine is:
Tasks: 74 total, 3 running, 71 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie

A lot of these will be kernel processes, and all the applications will be counted to. Run "ps aux" to see whats running.

Just use whatever works. GNOME-terminal and Kterm should work fine.

Can you post a screen shot? Or at least a better description?

Are you including the disk cache/buffers?

Linux (just like windows, macos etc) will allocate unused memory to buffers/cache to improve performance. Since you've found top, on the Mem: & Swap: lines, the last feild is how much memory is being used.

For example, I have 512mb total, 5mb free, and buffers+cache is ~300mb. ie most of the time I don't use much memory.

Although I would imagine its using quite a bit of swap on 128mb for the latest KDE.

No thats fairly normal, you will see that most of them are sleeping. That number includes multiple threads, eg you will see 6 entries for "mingetty", which handles text console logins.

The zombie process is very unusual. It happens when a buggy parent app starts a child process to do something and never collects the results. The child process becomes a zombie [walking dead] until its master comes back for it. Its not doing any harm so don't worry about it.

If you use KDE then you may as well use konsole. RXVT etc can be removed. It would be a good idea to leave xterm installed.

191517 2003-11-13 05:35:00 try gnome-terminal if you run GNOME, or konsole if you use Kde3 :-) Chilling_Silently (228)
191518 2003-11-14 05:14:00 How do I change the refresh rate?

Im having a lot of trouble trying to install this linux game called koules.

Can you lead me through how to install please? And then if anything goes wrong I will tell you.

www.ucw.cz

I got both the rpm, and the tar.gz thing.

For the rpm, open a terminal window an as root, type:
rpm -Uvh rpmnamehere.rpm

That should install it.

The tar.gz is likely source code for it, and I dont think you want to be compiling just yet :-)

There should be a GUI-Config for changing the refresh rate somewhere in MDK, but you'll have to wait for a MDK user to help you there... Unless you wanna get down and dirty and edit your XF86Config file?
;-)

Cheers

Chill.
